Worrying Trends: Only 14% of Elderly Malaysians Ageing Well

Post by : Shakul

A fresh national survey indicates that just 14.7 per cent of Malaysians aged 60 and over are viewed as “ageing well”, raising alarms about the existing healthcare frameworks and support mechanisms for the senior demographic.

These findings emerge from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2025, a significant government-endorsed research project assessing the physical, mental, and social health of senior citizens across Malaysia. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad cited the results as a “call to action,” emphasizing that further efforts are essential to enhance the lives of elderly individuals.

Involving over 7,500 participants, the survey was carried out from July to September 2025 through in-depth interviews and clinical evaluations, achieving a response rate exceeding 70 per cent. This is the second time the NHMS has concentrated on the 60-plus age group, following a similar investigation conducted in 2018.

Currently, Malaysia houses around 4.1 million individuals in this age bracket, with projections indicating the nation will attain an ageing status by 2036. Experts caution that if robust policies and improved healthcare are not implemented, challenges relating to the ageing populace may escalate in upcoming years.

The idea of “ageing well” encompasses more than just physical health; it includes elements like independence, mental wellness, financial stability, and social engagement. The low figure points to the struggles many elderly Malaysians endure in preserving a good quality of life.

The Ministry of Health noted that these insights will influence future policies and enhance support infrastructures for seniors. A comprehensive report is anticipated in the following months, offering deeper insights into the hurdles faced by Malaysia’s ageing community.

This study highlights the pressing need for extensive strategies such as enhanced healthcare accessibility, community support systems, and proactive long-term care planning, to ensure that more Malaysians can enjoy dignified and healthy ageing.
