Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) upgrade, known as the “Mad Max” mode, has sparked concern following reports of vehicles exceeding legal speed limits. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Friday that it is gathering information from Tesla regarding this feature.
This high-performance driving mode, as noted by some Tesla users on social media, allows cars to rapidly accelerate and maneuver through traffic at a speed described as “remarkable,” akin to a sports vehicle on public roads. The NHTSA reminds drivers that they remain responsible for steering the vehicle and adhering to traffic regulations.
Safety Investigation Underway
Previously, the agency had launched an extensive inquiry into about 2.9 million Tesla vehicles outfitted with FSD, spurred by numerous reports of traffic law infractions and accidents. These include 14 accidents and 23 injuries, along with several cases where cars ignored red lights during FSD use. Certain reports have flagged collisions at intersections despite clear traffic signals, raising doubts about the system’s dependability in real-world conditions.
This review by the NHTSA follows a comprehensive examination of Tesla’s FSD system, which aims to aid drivers rather than replace their control. Even though the system necessitates human oversight and intervention, its heightened activity level under Mad Max mode has raised alarms with regulators.
Tesla’s Response on FSD
Tesla asserts that its FSD can navigate “nearly any location with minimal input” while stressing the necessity for driver vigilance. Although the company has not formally addressed the NHTSA's inquiry into the Mad Max mode, it has previously lauded the feature's capacity to handle traffic seamlessly and efficiently.
Experts in the industry observe that Tesla’s approach with Mad Max illustrates its aim to present FSD as more thrilling, yet it also highlights the ongoing conflict between cutting-edge driving assistance technology and road safety practices.
