India Excludes Nitish Reddy for Kolkata Clash Against South Africa

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, has indicated the team’s lineup for the upcoming Test match against South Africa in Kolkata. A significant change is the release of young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who will join India A for a one-day series against South Africa A instead.

This strategic decision is part of the Indian management's aim to adapt the team to Kolkata's playing conditions. Ten Doeschate stated that while Nitish remains a vital part of the team’s future, they prefer adding another batter for this match. As a result, wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is set to feature in the starting eleven against South Africa, who are the reigning World Test Champions.

Following the coach’s press conference at Eden Gardens, the BCCI confirmed Nitish's release from the squad. He is now set to participate in the three-match one-day series in Rajkot from November 13 to 19. There are plans for him to return to the Test squad for the second match starting on November 22 in Guwahati.

The BCCI clarified that this move aims to provide Nitish with ample match time, especially following a tough few months due to injuries. By playing competitive matches for India A, he will gather crucial experience rather than sitting on the sidelines.

Discussion around Nitish’s role in the home Tests intensified after his recent series against the West Indies, where he bowled only four overs in the first Test in Ahmedabad without batting. The second Test in Delhi saw him score 43 runs while batting at number five, but he was not called to bowl, stirring debate on the need for a dedicated bowler over a developing all-rounder.

Various former players, including Gautam Gambhir, supported Nitish's inclusion, asserting it would be a valuable learning opportunity. Gambhir noted the benefit of being mentored by senior fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, advocating against limiting him to only challenging overseas tours.

Nonetheless, Ten Doeschate emphasized the primacy of strategy in crucial matches. “In the West Indies series, we said it was vital to groom Nitish. Nevertheless, strategy comes first,” he clarified, adding that the significance of the series and expected conditions in Kolkata warranted his exclusion from this Test.

Reports confirm Nitish has already departed the Indian camp for Rajkot to join the India A squad, signifying that India has finalized its strategy for the first Test and aims for a balanced lineup suited to Eden Gardens' pitch conditions.

The first Test against South Africa is essential for India’s home season. The team is keen to secure a strong start in front of their supporters following a successful series against the West Indies. Facing the World Test Champions, South Africa, presents a formidable challenge, which makes the strategic selections even more critical.

With Nitish out temporarily, all attention turns to Dhruv Jurel’s performance under pressure. The team will depend on seasoned players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah to lead them to victory in the opening Test.

For Nitish Kumar Reddy, this decision may yield long-term benefits, allowing him to maintain form and regain confidence before rejoining the senior squad for the second Test. The management has reiterated his continued inclusion in their long-term Test plans.
