During the opening of the fifth session of the OIC Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water, Saudi Arabia highlighted the urgent need to strengthen water resource management, water projects, and infrastructure. The conference, themed "From Vision to Impact," focused on turning plans into measurable results that improve water security and support sustainable development across OIC member states.
Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley emphasized that water security is a key pillar of sustainable development and public health. He pointed out that rising population, climate change, and water scarcity present growing challenges to OIC countries. Alfadley called for enhanced water efficiency, improved infrastructure, and secured funding to manage water resources effectively.
The minister acknowledged the financial support from the Islamic Development Bank and other institutions in implementing the OIC's 2012 vision, the outcomes of the fourth conference in Cairo in 2018, and the 2025 Program of Action adopted by the 13th Islamic Summit in Istanbul. Alfadley stressed that these collaborations demonstrate the shared commitment of OIC members to conserve water for future generations.
Alfadley outlined Saudi Arabia's achievements in water management, including its comprehensive national strategy, the adoption of the Water Law, and measures to mitigate climate change impacts. He noted that the United Nations has documented these efforts in the Integrated Water Resources Management report, highlighting the Kingdom's leadership in sustainable water solutions.
The minister welcomed the announcement by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to establish the Global Water Organization (GWO) in Riyadh, serving as an international platform to address water challenges. Alfadley also invited all OIC countries to participate in the 11th World Water Forum to be held in Riyadh in 2027, emphasizing collaboration and practical steps to tackle global water issues.
OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Al-Quds Affairs, Ambassador Samir Bakr, commended Saudi Arabia’s leadership and initiatives, including the GWO. He stressed the importance of global cooperation on water security, sustainable management, and climate adaptation. Bakr also highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian support in Gaza and Palestine to secure safe drinking water and protect damaged water infrastructure.
The conference showcased the commitment of OIC member states to advance water management from planning to tangible outcomes. Saudi Arabia's leadership and initiatives aim to strengthen collaboration, enhance water security, and ensure sustainable development, creating a model for the international community to follow.
