Oman Attends OIC Meeting in Dakar to Support Cooperation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the State Council, joined the 54th meeting of the Executive Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States. This important meeting was held in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and brought together leaders and representatives from several Islamic nations. The main purpose was to discuss key issues facing the Islamic world and to find ways to strengthen cooperation between member states.

Oman’s Representation at the Event

Oman’s delegation was led by Honorable Mohammed bin Salem Al Harthy, who is a respected member of the Omani State Council. His presence reflected Oman’s commitment to active participation in international and regional platforms, especially those that aim to support the unity of the Islamic world. Oman has always believed in dialogue, peace, and cooperation, and Al Harthy’s role in the meeting was a continuation of that policy.

Opening of the Session

The meeting officially began with an opening address from His Excellency Malick Ndiaye, President of the National Assembly of Senegal. His Excellency welcomed all the participants and stressed the importance of unity among Islamic nations. The opening ceremony was attended by members of the Union’s General Secretariat, representatives of the Executive Committee, and delegations from the participating states. This highlighted the strong international cooperation that the OIC continues to promote.

Main Agenda of the Meeting

The meeting covered a wide range of important topics. One of the key points was the election of the Union’s vice-presidents for both the Arab and Asian sides. This election was important to ensure balanced representation and leadership within the organization. Another focus was the review of reports from the General Secretariat, which summarized the outcomes of previous meetings and activities. These reports helped members understand the progress made so far and what still needs attention.

Planning Future Meetings

The committee also discussed and approved the agendas for future meetings of the standing committees, specialized committees, and sub-committees. These agendas will guide the work of the organization in the coming months and years. Along with this, the members agreed on the locations and timings of these upcoming meetings, which ensures smooth coordination and planning for all involved states.

Key Issues Raised by Delegations

During the discussions, many representatives of the participating delegations shared their views. They raised several challenges facing the Islamic world today, but one of the most pressing topics was the Palestinian cause. Speakers strongly condemned Israeli aggression and ongoing violations against Palestinians. They emphasized the urgent need to unify efforts among OIC member states to stop these violations and to work together for peace and stability in the region.

Focus on the Palestinian Cause

The Palestinian issue remains at the heart of many OIC discussions. During this meeting, participants once again stressed that the Palestinian struggle is not just a regional matter but an issue for the entire Islamic world. The delegates agreed that Islamic countries must take a united stance in supporting Palestinian rights and pressuring for peace talks that lead to justice and stability. Oman, like many other nations, has always stood firmly in support of Palestine and called for an end to violence.

The Role of the OIC Parliamentary Union

The Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States plays an important role in coordinating parliamentary positions on issues that affect the Islamic world. By bringing together lawmakers and representatives from member states, the Union allows for stronger cooperation on legislative and oversight activities. This cooperation strengthens the ability of Islamic nations to address common challenges and to present a unified voice on the international stage.

Promoting Dialogue and Joint Action

One of the key goals of the meeting was to encourage dialogue and joint action. The Islamic world faces many regional and global challenges, such as political instability, economic pressures, and conflicts. The meeting served as a platform to build understanding, promote peace, and reinforce the values of solidarity. The OIC believes that only by working together can member states find effective solutions to these complex challenges.

Oman’s Role in Islamic Cooperation

Oman’s participation in the meeting is part of its broader foreign policy, which is based on peace, neutrality, and dialogue. The Sultanate often plays a bridging role in international affairs, and by attending this meeting, Oman once again showed its commitment to strengthening unity among Islamic nations. Oman’s approach is to promote cooperation rather than division and to support initiatives that lead to long-term stability and development.

Importance of Parliamentary Cooperation

The meeting also highlighted the importance of cooperation at the parliamentary level. Laws, oversight, and legislation in each country play a major role in shaping policies and supporting international commitments. By working together, the parliaments of OIC member states can ensure that their governments uphold agreements, respect international law, and support causes important to the Islamic community, such as Palestine.

Building a Common Stand

One of the achievements of such meetings is the creation of a common stand among Islamic nations. Even though each member state faces unique challenges, the OIC allows them to unite on issues that affect all Muslims worldwide. This unity is important to increase influence on international decisions, whether in the United Nations or other global organizations.

Challenges Facing the Islamic World

The meeting also reminded participants that the Islamic world is facing many serious challenges. These include political conflicts, humanitarian crises, terrorism, poverty, and external interference. By coming together under the OIC framework, member states hope to face these challenges with stronger coordination and shared responsibility.

A Step Toward Greater Unity

The 54th meeting of the OIC Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee was another step toward greater unity among Islamic nations. The decisions taken at the meeting, such as electing new vice-presidents and setting agendas for future sessions, will guide the Union in its ongoing work. The discussions on Palestine and other issues of importance showed the strong commitment of the member states to continue supporting justice, peace, and cooperation.

The participation of Oman’s State Council in the Dakar meeting of the OIC Parliamentary Union reflects the country’s active role in regional and international affairs. The meeting itself highlighted the importance of unity, dialogue, and parliamentary cooperation in addressing the challenges of the Islamic world. With a special focus on the Palestinian cause, the meeting showed that OIC member states remain committed to supporting their brothers and sisters in Palestine, while also strengthening ties between nations to face future challenges together.
