Oman and Botswana Expand Strategic Cooperation

Gaborone, Botswana — September 17, 2026: Oman and Botswana have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding political, economic and cultural cooperation during Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to Botswana. The two leaders discussed ways to use the strengths and resources of both countries to develop practical partnerships across several sectors.

State Visit Marks New Stage in Relations

Sultan Haitham’s state visit to Botswana took place on September 16 and 17, 2026, following an invitation from President Duma Gideon Boko. The visit has been presented by both sides as an important milestone in bilateral relations. Oman and Botswana established diplomatic relations in October 2025, followed by high-level exchanges between the two countries.

Nine Bilateral Documents Signed

During the visit, the two countries welcomed the signing of nine bilateral documents. They cover a general cooperation agreement, political consultations, investment promotion, trade and industry, air services, mutual visa exemption for certain official passport holders, energy security, mineral exploration and pharmaceutical security. The documents are intended to provide a framework for expanding practical cooperation between the two countries.

Energy, Mining and Investment in Focus

Energy, mining and investment were among the key areas discussed by the two leaders. Official Omani information said earlier talks had also identified renewable energy, mining, investment, logistics, food security and agriculture as areas for closer cooperation. Botswana’s mineral resources, particularly its diamond industry, were also highlighted during the visit.

Trade, Agriculture and Logistics

The two countries also agreed to explore wider cooperation in food security and agriculture, transport and logistics, tourism, health, education and skills development. The focus reflects an effort to broaden bilateral relations beyond traditional diplomatic engagement and create opportunities for businesses and institutions in both countries.

Cooperation in Mineral Processing

Sultan Haitham also visited the Botswana Diamond Trading Company in Gaborone to learn more about the country’s diamond industry. The two sides agreed to encourage communication between relevant institutions and private-sector stakeholders to explore opportunities in mineral processing, value addition, technology, investment and skills development.

Political and Diplomatic Cooperation

The leaders also discussed regional and international developments, including issues concerning Africa and the Middle East. They reaffirmed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, mediation and multilateral cooperation through the United Nations and other international forums. Botswana’s President also expressed appreciation for Oman’s efforts supporting mediation and peaceful solutions to regional conflicts.

Future of Oman-Botswana Relations

The two leaders said implementation of the signed agreements would require continued coordination between ministries and institutions. They called for mechanisms to monitor progress, address challenges and advance the agreed areas of cooperation. Sultan Haitham also invited President Duma Boko to make a state visit to Oman, and the invitation was accepted through the diplomatic process.The latest agreements add an institutional framework to a relationship that has developed rapidly since diplomatic ties were established in 2025. With energy, mining, investment, trade, agriculture, logistics, health and skills development now included in the cooperation agenda, Oman and Botswana are seeking to build broader economic and institutional links.
