Collaborative Effort for Green Hydrogen Production in Austria

Collaborative Effort for Green Hydrogen Production in Austria

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a significant move for clean energy, Masdar has partnered with Austria’s OMV to create a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyser facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. This initiative is one of the largest in Europe, aiming to generate renewable hydrogen to aid in the decarbonisation of industrial sectors.

Construction will commence in September 2025, with the facility expected to begin operations in 2027. OMV will own the majority of the joint venture, with Masdar holding a 49% stake. This collaboration combines OMV’s industry experience with Masdar’s technical and financial know-how in renewable energy projects internationally.

As part of the project, OMV will supply the renewable energy needed for hydrogen generation and will maintain ownership of the production output. This effort builds on OMV's existing 10 MW green hydrogen facility in Schwechat. Additionally, the venture sets the stage for future projects centered on sustainable aviation fuels, synthetic chemicals, and expanding green hydrogen initiatives throughout Europe and the UAE.

This partnership underlines a strong commitment to energy transition, working to deliver scalable solutions for industries with difficult emissions to reduce while bolstering Europe’s hydrogen economy. The joint venture is expected to complete its approval process by early 2026, marking a substantial investment in Austria’s clean energy framework and the broader European renewable energy landscape.
