Australia's head coach, Andrew McDonald, is optimistic about the potential return of captain Pat Cummins for the second Ashes Test. He believes it's unlikely that fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will be sidelined for the entire series, despite his current injury status. McDonald shared these insights during a media session as the team readies for their upcoming match.
Earlier, Cummins remarked he was only a “half chance” to participate in the day-night Test against England set for December 4 in Brisbane. However, McDonald conveyed a more positive outlook, explaining Cummins had aimed to bowl in the nets on the fourth day of the Perth Test. The swift victory, achieved within two days, necessitated changes to the training schedule. Consequently, Cummins' bowling session was delayed by an additional day.
Acknowledging that the situation didn't unfold as intended, McDonald remains hopeful. He indicated that once Cummins resumes bowling, the team will have a clearer picture of his recovery. Discussions regarding Cummins’ readiness will persist until just before the next match. McDonald noted that Cummins appears close to completing his rehabilitation, which bodes well for Australia.
Another vital member of Australia’s pace attack, Hazlewood, missed the first Test due to a hamstring strain. McDonald stated that Hazlewood has recently begun his recovery process. More clarity will be available as Hazlewood advances through his rehabilitation, though the coach is positive about his potential return later in the Ashes series.
The third spearhead, Mitchell Starc, was exceptional during the first Test, clinching 10 wickets for 113 runs, which greatly contributed to Australia's triumph. Additionally, Travis Head's remarkable 123-run innings was pivotal in securing the win on home turf.
In terms of health concerns, opener Usman Khawaja experienced back spasms during the Perth Test, causing him to miss the second innings. Khawaja has since returned home for further medical evaluations. McDonald mentioned that Khawaja’s participation in the second Test remains uncertain, even if he becomes fit, pending further updates from healthcare professionals.
With Khawaja absent, Travis Head stepped in to open the batting in the second innings, scoring a crucial century. McDonald indicated this might become a future strategy, explaining that batting orders can be adjusted in the second innings, akin to tactics employed in one-day cricket under adverse conditions. He confirmed they are considering Head as an opening option, with Head expressing interest in the role.
As the forthcoming match will be a pink-ball Test at the Gabba, discussions regarding team strategy are underway. Pink-ball encounters, particularly under lights, often favor fast bowlers. However, McDonald clarified that Nathan Lyon, Australia’s seasoned spinner, will not be easily excluded. The coach explained that the middle session, even in pink-ball conditions, is usually conducive to spin, affirming Lyon's essential role in the bowling lineup.
McDonald maintains a positive outlook on Australia's prospects, believing that Cummins, Hazlewood, and Khawaja have good chances of returning imminently. With stellar performances from players like Starc and Head, Australia seeks to sustain its upward momentum in the Ashes series.
