In a significant crackdown, Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has taken into custody 13 militants, primarily associated with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). These arrests occurred during a wave of intelligence-driven operations throughout Punjab province. Officials indicated that these actions preemptively thwarted a potential terror assault targeting law enforcement and key facilities in the area.
The CTD officials revealed that these operations, executed across multiple cities over the past week, were prompted by specific intelligence regarding suspicious militant movements. Approximately 58 targeted raids were orchestrated, resulting in the apprehension of the suspects, who are linked to various extremist factions, chiefly the TTP responsible for numerous fatal attacks within Pakistan.
Among the detained, a principal suspect named Mukhtar Ahmad was captured in Lahore. Authorities regard him as a perilous TTP operative, reportedly in possession of significant quantities of explosive materials. During these operations, security forces seized explosives, detonators, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), prohibited literature, mobile devices, and other items believed to be associated with terror plotting.
According to the CTD, the militants were orchestrating strikes against security establishments and governmental facilities in Punjab. Officials emphasized that the timely interventions averted what could have unfolded into a catastrophic terror event. Separate legal cases have been initiated against all 13 individuals, with ongoing investigations to uncover other potential affiliates linked to the network.
Pakistan has witnessed a troubling escalation in militant-related violence, particularly near the Afghan border. With the Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan in 2021, the TTP has amplified its assaults on security forces and civilian areas. Pakistani officials assert that these militant entities are aiming to extend their influence across the nation, compelling security agencies to bolster counter-terror operations.
Experts in security view these arrests as a critical move towards dismantling militant infrastructures within Pakistan. Authorities reiterated that further intelligence exchange and ongoing operations will persist across various regions to avert future threats and bolster national safety. The government has vowed to implement stringent measures against all proscribed organizations engaged in terrorist acts and extremist undertakings.
