Pakistan Beat South Africa by 93 Runs to Lead WTC Table

Pakistan Beat South Africa by 93 Runs to Lead WTC Table

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Pakistan began their home Test series against South Africa in spectacular fashion, winning the first match by 93 runs at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. This victory gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series and sees them rise to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. The win also pushed India down to fourth place.

Strong Batting Performance Sets the Tone

Electing to bat first, Pakistan posted a total of 378 runs. Key contributions came from Mam-ul-Haq and Salman Agha, who scored 93 runs each, alongside half-centuries from captain Shan Masood and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan. Their partnership laid a solid foundation for Pakistan to take control of the game.

South Africa Struggles Against Spin

Senuran Muthusamy shone for Pakistan, becoming only the second visiting spinner to take six wickets in the first innings of a Test in Pakistan, following Shane Warne’s 1994/95 performance at the same venue. South Africa’s top order, led by Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton, could manage only 269 runs in their first innings, giving Pakistan a healthy 109-run lead.

Second Innings Drama

In Pakistan’s second innings, Babar Azam tried to fight back with 42 runs but lacked support from other batters. Muthusamy again dominated, claiming a five-wicket haul, and South Africa were restricted to just 183 runs in their second innings. Noman Ali took six wickets in the first innings and four in the second, while Shaheen Afridi contributed four wickets, sealing Pakistan’s commanding win.

Impact on WTC Points Table

This Test marked Pakistan’s first appearance in the 2025/27 WTC cycle. The victory allowed them to join former champions Australia at the top, both boasting a 100% points completion rate (PCT). India, previously third after defeating the West Indies 2-0, dropped to fourth with a PCT of 61.90. South Africa remains in seventh place, while New Zealand is yet to play their first match in this cycle.

Pakistan’s sensational start to the series gives them momentum as they aim to strengthen their position in the WTC standings. The team will look to maintain consistency in batting and bowling in the second Test to secure a series win. With strong performances from key players like Masood, Rizwan, Muthusamy, and Shaheen, Pakistan has set a high benchmark for the remainder of the WTC cycle.

This victory not only demonstrates Pakistan’s dominance at home but also sends a clear message to the rest of the cricketing world. Strong teamwork, effective spin bowling, and resilient batting have propelled Pakistan to the top of the WTC table, making them serious contenders in this championship cycle.
