Pheu Thai Selects Yodchanan Wongsawat for Prime Minister Role

Pheu Thai Selects Yodchanan Wongsawat for Prime Minister Role

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The Pheu Thai party in Thailand is banking on the Shinawatra lineage as it gears up for the general elections slated for February 8, 2026. With the founder Thaksin Shinawatra currently serving a one-year prison sentence, his nephew, Yodchanan Wongsawat, has been nominated as their prime ministerial candidate.

At 46 years old, Yodchanan is the offspring of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and the nephew of Thaksin. Although he is new to the political arena, he draws upon the formidable legacy of the Shinawatra family, which has had a substantial impact on Thai politics for over twenty years. “I’m small in stature, yet I stand on the shoulders of a giant,” Yodchanan remarked to Reuters, recognizing the significant influence of his family.

Thaksin was sentenced to prison in September for bypassing a prior legal ruling concerning conflict of interest and abuse of power during his time as prime minister from 2001 to 2006. Meanwhile, Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was ousted in August following a court decision regarding a controversial phone call with Cambodia's former leader, Hun Sen. The diplomatic relationship with Cambodia remains tense, with disputes re-emerging in December.

Political instability has diminished Pheu Thai’s backing. According to a December poll by the National Institute of Development Administration, the party’s support plummeted to 11.04%, a drop from 13.96% in September and 28.05% in March. The elections were pre-emptively called after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul dismantled parliament due to conflicts with the opposition.

Despite facing such adversities, Yodchanan is optimistic that Pheu Thai can reclaim its standing by pushing for policies such as universal healthcare and cash assistance, which have historically resonated with rural voters. “We remain confident in our ability to win,” he asserted. “If we can articulate our vision effectively, we will garner support.”

A scholar by background, Yodchanan holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Arlington and is a professor in biomedical engineering at Mahidol University in Bangkok. Although his political journey is still budding—primarily functioning as a technology policy advisor—he aims to utilize his expertise in managing intricate projects in effective leadership.

Pheu Thai has a noteworthy track record of rallying political freshers to success. Yingluck Shinawatra took office as prime minister in 2011, followed by Srettha Thavisin and Paetongtarn Shinawatra in 2023. Yodchanan’s entry mirrors this precedent, albeit amid challenges such as rising nationalist sentiment and ongoing disputes with Cambodia.

Experts predict that the approaching election may not yield a decisive majority. Yodchanan has expressed his openness to forming a coalition government if necessary. “Winning is our aim, but if not, we are willing to collaborate with a party who shares our ideals,” he stated.

As Thailand approaches its elections, Pheu Thai must effectively harness the legacy of the Shinawatra family while also persuading voters of its capability to deliver innovative leadership. Yodchanan’s candidacy will be closely scrutinized, holding potential implications for Thailand’s political future.
