51 Dead After Passenger Ferry Trisha Kerstin 3 Sinks in Philippines

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The sinking of the passenger-cargo ferry Trisha Kerstin 3 near the Philippines has resulted in a major tragedy, with at least 51 people confirmed dead. The Philippine Coast Guard shared the latest update after recovery teams found more bodies during ongoing search and rescue operations. The accident has deeply affected families and communities across the region.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, divers recovered five more bodies on Tuesday from the waters near Basilan province. With these new recoveries, the total number of people who lost their lives has risen to 51. Rescue teams have been working continuously in difficult sea conditions to locate missing passengers and bring closure to their families.

The ferry was carrying a total of 359 people when it sank. This included 332 passengers and 27 crew members. The incident happened on the night of 26th January, about one nautical mile off the coast of Basilan province in the southern Philippines. Reports say that the vessel experienced technical problems before it went down.

So far, 316 people have survived the accident. Many of the survivors were rescued shortly after the ferry sank, thanks to the quick response of the coast guard and nearby vessels. Survivors were taken to safe locations, where they received medical attention and support. Authorities are continuing efforts to account for all passengers and crew members.

The Philippine Coast Guard stated that investigations are underway to understand the exact cause of the sinking. Initial information suggests that technical issues may have played a role, but officials are examining all possible factors. Ensuring the safety of sea travel remains a top priority for authorities, especially in a country like the Philippines, which relies heavily on ferry transport due to its many islands.

This tragic ferry accident highlights the risks of sea travel and the importance of strict safety checks and emergency preparedness. The government is expected to review safety measures and take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
