Oscar Piastri Claims Qatar Sprint Pole to Stay in Title Race

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Oscar Piastri put on an impressive show at the Qatar Grand Prix as he secured pole position for the upcoming sprint race. This strong performance has brought his championship hopes back to life after several tough weeks on the track. Piastri, who is chasing his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the standings, set the fastest lap of 1 minute 20.055 seconds during sprint qualifying. His lap time was just enough to place him ahead of George Russell, who finished only 0.032 seconds slower.

This tight sprint qualifying session saw Norris finishing in third place, two-tenths behind Piastri. Fernando Alonso followed in fourth position, while the two Red Bull drivers — led by Yuki Tsunoda — completed the top positions. Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion and one of Piastri’s title rivals, struggled with his car and could only manage sixth. He was heard complaining about the car bouncing heavily during the session.

Piastri’s performance was particularly meaningful because he has not won a race since the Dutch Grand Prix in August. His form over the last two months has not matched his early-season pace, but this pole position gives him a chance to turn things around. This is also his second sprint pole in Qatar and adds to his earlier sprint race victories.

Speaking after securing pole, Piastri said it felt good to finally have a strong day again. He explained that everything worked well from the start of the session and that he still had a little more pace left for the final lap. He added that even though there are areas to improve, it is encouraging to say that while starting from pole.

Norris, meanwhile, was frustrated. He has the chance to win the championship this weekend if he outscores both Piastri and Verstappen by two points. However, starting third may limit his chances because the Qatar circuit is known for making overtaking difficult. Norris admitted that he may have to “settle for P3” in the sprint.

The qualifying session began in cooler desert temperatures, with Verstappen showing strong pace early on. However, things went badly for Lewis Hamilton, who is having a difficult season. The seven-time world champion was eliminated early, finishing down in 18th place. He explained over the radio that his car was simply too slow to go any faster. This added to what he himself has called a “nightmare” year.

In the second stage of qualifying, Norris topped the times again while other drivers ran into problems. Rookie Isack Hadjar saw his lap deleted for going beyond track limits. Drivers like Oliver Bearman, Gabriel Bortoleto, Nico Hulkenberg, and Esteban Ocon also failed to make it into the top 10 shootout.

The final sprint qualifying segment saw Russell take an early lead after switching to soft tyres. Verstappen, however, faced more issues with his car handling and ran off the track. On their first timed laps, Piastri moved ahead of Norris by just 0.044 seconds, while Russell followed in third. Verstappen improved slightly but still dropped positions as other drivers finished stronger.

The final laps decided the order, with Piastri staying ahead of Russell to secure pole. Norris made a mistake at the last corner and went wide, forcing him to settle for third place. Meanwhile, Piastri ended the day with relief and confidence, saying, “It’s nice to be back.”

With this sprint pole, Piastri now has a real opportunity to close the gap in the Drivers’ Championship. The fight between Piastri, Norris, and Verstappen remains intense, making this weekend a crucial moment in the Formula 1 title race. The Qatar sprint promises to be a key event for all three contenders as they battle for the championship lead.
