Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar has once again made history in the world of cycling. He achieved a rare double-double by winning the Tour de France for the second year in a row and claiming back-to-back UCI Road World Championship titles. This remarkable feat cements his place among the greatest riders of all time.
Dominant Ride In Rwanda
The 27-year-old star showcased his incredible strength and endurance during the men’s elite road race in Kigali, Rwanda. Covering a tough 267.5 km course, Pogačar crossed the finish line in six hours, 21 minutes, and 20 seconds. His performance mirrored last year’s victory, proving his ability to dominate under any conditions.
The Brutal Race Course
The Rwandan circuit was considered one of the toughest in recent memory. Known as the “land of a thousand hills,” the course was also 1,000 metres higher in altitude than the Swiss route used in the previous championship. Out of 165 riders who began the race, only 30 managed to finish, highlighting the brutal demands of the competition.
Launching A Bold Attack
With just over 100 kilometres left, Pogačar launched a long-range attack. Spain’s Juan Ayuso initially managed to keep pace with him, and later Isaac Del Toro of Mexico also joined the front group. However, the Slovenian’s strength soon proved too much for both riders.
Breaking Away From Rivals
After riding alongside Del Toro for a short time, Pogačar made his decisive move. With 66 kilometres to go, he surged ahead on a solo mission. From that moment, he never looked back, maintaining his lead despite the punishing hills and soaring heat. His calm and determined riding left spectators in awe.
Evenepoel’s Brave Effort
Behind him, Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel attempted to mount a challenge. Known for his time-trialling strength, Evenepoel launched a powerful attack 20 kilometres from the finish. Having recently secured his third consecutive individual time trial crown, he was confident in his abilities. However, despite his efforts, the Belgian was unable to close the gap to Pogačar.
Final Moments Of Glory
As the race reached its final lap, Pogačar still held a comfortable lead of a minute and a half over Evenepoel. Approaching the last climb, he began to celebrate, raising his arms in triumph as he crossed the finish line. The victory not only gave him the gold medal but also cemented his reputation as the man to beat in global cycling.
Podium Results
Evenepoel secured the silver medal with a finishing time of 6:22:48, while Ireland’s Ben Healy completed the podium, claiming bronze in 6:23:36. The results demonstrated the high level of competition, but none could match the strength and strategy of the Slovenian champion.
Pogačar Reflects On His Victory
After the race, Pogačar admitted the course had tested him to his limits. “I was left quite early, I was solo like last year and just fighting with myself, but I am happy I made it,” he said. He described the final laps as particularly challenging, with his energy levels running low. Yet, his determination carried him through to the finish line.
A Successful Week In Kigali
Pogačar also praised the host nation Rwanda for delivering a memorable championship. “It was an incredible experience altogether in Kigali, and let’s say it was a successful week,” he said. His victory not only marked another milestone in his career but also added to the legacy of the first-ever UCI Road World Championships held on African soil.
