Political Controversy Erupts Over Nepal PM's Border Remarks

Post by : Shakul

In Nepal, a political firestorm has arisen following Prime Minister Balen Shah's surprising comments on the longstanding border conflict with India. During his first speech to Parliament since taking office, Shah alleged that India had not only encroached upon Nepali territory but that Nepal also has claims on certain Indian lands. This assertion has triggered widespread discussions across the nation.

Shah's remarks came amid talks about unresolved border disputes in the regions of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani, which have been contentious in Nepal-India relations for years. He indicated that both countries should rely on historical documents, technical investigations, and expert analysis to clarify facts and achieve a suitable resolution.

Nepal and India share a border that spans over 1,800 kilometers, largely defined by the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. While many sections have been established, some areas remain contentious due to incomplete mapping and conflicting historical narratives, regularly causing diplomatic strains between the two nations.

The Prime Minister's statement faced immediate backlash from opposition parties, foreign policy analysts, and former diplomats. Critics claimed that the comments risked undermining Nepal's longstanding official stance on the ownership of disputed territories. Several opposition lawmakers pressed Shah to provide proof for his assertions or retract his statement from the parliamentary record.

Former diplomats from Nepal questioned the foundation of the Prime Minister's allegations. While noting that individual cases of land usage by local inhabitants in regions lacking clear border markers exist, they contended that no formal evidence has been presented to support claims of Nepal encroaching on Indian land. Experts expressed concern that such declarations could complicate future negotiations with New Delhi.

Amid escalating criticism, Nepal's Foreign Ministry issued a clarification stating that the Prime Minister was alluding to cases of land use in no-man's land areas rather than any official encroachment by the Nepali government. The ministry reaffirmed that Nepal's established stance on disputed territories like Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura remains unchanged.

The ministry also highlighted that technical teams from both nations continue their work on border pillar maintenance, mapping initiatives, and documentation of land use in sensitive locales. Nepal reiterated its dedication to resolving all pending border issues through peaceful diplomatic engagement and mutual recognition.

As of yet, India has not issued an official response to Shah's remarks. Nevertheless, New Delhi has consistently maintained that the disputed regions are part of Uttarakhand, reiterating that differences should be settled through bilateral discussions. This latest uproar underscores the enduring sensitivity surrounding border matters and their critical role in shaping Nepal-India relations.
