Privacy Advocates Accuse TikTok of Tracking Grindr Users Without Consent

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A prominent European privacy organization has leveled accusations at TikTok for allegedly tracking users on other mobile applications, including the dating platform Grindr. The group's complaint emphasizes that this tracking occurred without explicit user consent, potentially compromising highly sensitive personal information.

The complaint was lodged by noyb, which stands for None of Your Business, with Austria's data protection authority. They pointed out the involvement of both Grindr and a data aggregation service called AppsFlyer, suggesting that these entities played a role in the cross-app sharing of user data.

A user alarmed by the extent of this tracking retrieved their data from the companies and discovered that TikTok had access to details from various apps on their device, including Grindr interactions, LinkedIn activity, and even items placed in an online shopping cart.

Experts in privacy law highlight the gravity of this issue, as certain information correlated with sexual orientation is safeguarded under European regulations due to the potential risks of discrimination, harm, or exposure. The group contends that such information should never be disseminated without unambiguous and informed consent.

According to noyb, TikTok allegedly utilized this data for purposes including targeted advertising, analytics, and security. They argue that neither Grindr nor AppsFlyer had the legal authority to relay this data to TikTok. Additionally, the group claims that TikTok did not adequately clarify what data it collected and how it was employed, violating EU privacy standards.

The privacy organization is urging regulators to conduct an investigation, mandate the cessation of this tracking behavior, and impose fines should violations be substantiated. So far, responses from TikTok, Grindr, and AppsFlyer have not been forthcoming.

This isn’t the first occasion where TikTok has been scrutinized in Europe. Earlier this year, the company faced a hefty fine running into hundreds of millions of euros for mishandling user data. Grindr is also embroiled in legal issues in the UK regarding allegations that sensitive health information was shared without user consent.

Privacy advocates underscore that this situation underscores the challenges users face in discerning who is collecting their personal information and for what purposes it is used. They caution that improved enforcement measures are essential to safeguard individuals in a digital landscape where personal data can traverse great distances unnoticed.
