Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a significant summit in New Delhi on Friday. Marking Putin's first visit to India in four years, the Indian government rolled out a ceremonial welcome filled with warmth. This gathering is pivotal as both nations seek to fortify their historic partnership against pressure from Western countries.
During their discussions, Modi expressed India's firm stance on supporting peace initiatives in Ukraine. He clarified that India is not neutral but advocates for diplomatic resolutions, reiterating that dialogue serves as the optimal path forward. In response, Putin thanked Modi for his dedication to peace, indicating that they had previously engaged in extensive discussions with various partners, including the U.S., on potential advancements.
The meeting also prioritized enhancing trade relationships. Russia aspires to augment imports from India and achieve $100 billion in bilateral trade by the year 2030. Current trade dynamics significantly favor Russia, largely due to India's acquisition of discounted Russian oil following the reduction of Western reliance on Moscow amid the Ukraine conflict. Nonetheless, India faced constraints in its oil purchases this year owing to U.S. tariffs and sanctions.
Defense cooperation was another key topic of their dialogue. Russia has long been India's principal arms supplier, and both nations expressed intent to broaden collaboration in sectors like technology, aviation, space, nuclear energy, and artificial intelligence. Accompanying Putin, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov expressed Russia's commitment to assist India in achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Putin received a grand reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day, highlighted by a 21-gun salute. After arriving a day prior for a private dinner, Putin and Modi shared a ride together. Following their discussions, both leaders are anticipated to unveil multiple agreements, including a significant deal involving Indian firms collaborating with Russia’s Uralchem group to establish a urea plant. Additionally, Russian banks such as Gazprombank and Alfa Bank have sought approval to operate in India to facilitate trade.
This summit also underscored persistent geopolitical strains. In a pre-meeting interview, Putin challenged the U.S. stance on advising India against purchasing Russian oil while continuing to import Russian nuclear fuel. He argued that if the U.S. has this right, India should also enjoy the same freedom. India has similarly contended that U.S. tariffs are unjust, particularly given that Western nations maintain trade with Moscow when it serves their interests.
The current landscape places India in a complex situation. Analysts suggest that India must carefully manage its strong affiliations with both Russia and the United States, as aligning with one could provoke the other. This dilemma has intensified since the onset of the Ukraine conflict. India has opted against direct criticism of Russia, focusing instead on advocating for peace and diplomatic approaches. Concurrently, New Delhi is enhancing its strategic ties with Washington, especially in technology and defense sectors.
Putin's visit follows his meeting with U.S. envoys regarding potential peace initiatives for Ukraine. While no formal agreement emerged, the timing of his trip to India underscores New Delhi's significance to Moscow. As global politics evolve rapidly, India perceives its relationship with Russia as essential to its long-term strategy while simultaneously nurturing its connections with the West.
