Putin Arrives in New Delhi for BRICS Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi to attend the BRICS summit and hold bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit comes as India hosts the summit in its capacity as the current BRICS chair, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening cooperation between India and Russia across several strategic sectors.

Modi-Putin Talks to Focus on Strategic Cooperation

Putin and Modi are scheduled to meet on Friday for discussions covering defence, energy and technology. The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek the previous week. During that meeting, Modi called for a transition from what he described as an “endless war” toward an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

BrahMos and Defence Projects on Agenda

Defence cooperation is expected to remain an important part of the India-Russia discussions. The talks are expected to explore strategic projects, including possible upgrades to the BrahMos missile system. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said New Delhi and Moscow were examining options related to the missile programme.

S-400 Deliveries and Su-57 Fighter Jets

Russia has also indicated its commitment to completing its remaining S-400 air defence system deliveries to India. Discussions are expected to include a proposed supply of Russian Su-57 fighter jets, adding another major defence issue to the bilateral agenda. The developments highlight the continuing importance of defence ties between New Delhi and Moscow.

Civil Nuclear Cooperation Also in Focus

Beyond defence, India and Russia are expected to discuss New Delhi’s plans to establish additional civil nuclear reactors. Energy cooperation remains an important part of the broader strategic relationship as both countries look at areas for long-term collaboration.

Putin to Meet Other Global Leaders

During his India visit, Putin is also scheduled to participate in the two-day BRICS summit and address the plenary session of the annual BRICS Business Forum. He is expected to visit the Innoprom exhibition with Modi and hold meetings with leaders including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

BRICS Summit Focuses on Global South

India’s BRICS chairship is being guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The summit agenda includes trade, investment, connectivity and high technology, along with cooperation in healthcare, agriculture, food, energy, disaster risk reduction and supply chains. India has also said it wants to use its chairship to highlight development priorities of the Global South.

Major International Gathering in Delhi

The BRICS summit is bringing together leaders and senior representatives from several countries and international organisations. The source says the summit will conclude with the release of the New Delhi Declaration, marking a key diplomatic moment for India’s BRICS chairship.
