Qatar-UK Joint Working Group Discusses Healthcare Innovation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A recent meeting was held via video conference between Qatar's Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and the Department of Health and Social Care from the United Kingdom. The MoPH team was led by Dr Salih Ali Al Marri, the Assistant Minister of Public Health for Health Affairs, while Fionn Craig, Deputy Director of Bilateral Relations and Trade at the UK's Department of Health and Social Care, led the British team.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in areas like tackling antimicrobial resistance, using artificial intelligence in healthcare, improving medical supply chain resilience, and ensuring patient safety and care quality.

During the meeting, Qatar shared its national plan to fight antimicrobial resistance, secure antibiotics, and improve pharmaceutical security. The UK team also discussed its initiatives related to antimicrobial resistance, including efforts started after the 2024 United Nations meeting on the subject. They also talked about the creation of a new scientific committee to help guide actions on this issue.

Other key topics discussed were the digital transformation of healthcare, including Qatar's Health Information Exchange Platform and efforts to collaborate with the private sector. They also talked about how artificial intelligence is being used in both countries' healthcare systems, the ethics and regulations surrounding AI, and the UK's plan to transition to digital systems over the next ten years.

Additionally, the meeting covered Qatar's strategies for making medical supply chains stronger and how artificial intelligence is being used to improve them. There was also a discussion about Qatar's approach to improving patient safety, with a focus on policies and training for better care.
