Qatar's Resolution on Peace Gains Approval at IPU Assembly

Post by : Bianca Haleem

During the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Turkey, member nations reached a unanimous agreement on a pivotal resolution put forward by Qatar alongside other nations.

This resolution underscores the critical necessity for unified parliamentary actions to endorse ceasefire initiatives and foster peace within the Middle East and beyond. It accentuates the increasing significance of parliamentary diplomacy in sustaining global peace and security.

The Shura Council of Qatar's proposal garnered significant backing and was officially incorporated into the Assembly's agenda. Notably, this is the first instance where an emergency item presented by an Arab nation received adequate votes for discussion at the IPU General Assembly, marking a remarkable diplomatic success.

Leading the Qatari delegation, Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim engaged actively in dialogue and sessions focusing on the theme, “Promoting hope, preserving peace, and ensuring justice for future generations.”

At the Governing Council meeting, Deputy Speaker Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti underscored Qatar's role in global progress. She referenced a parliamentary forum hosted in Doha during the Second World Summit for Social Development, concentrating on investment in human capital and the responsibilities of legislators in societal advancement.

Additionally, she addressed vital topics such as enhancing the IPU’s operational framework, addressing digital violence, and countering misinformation that affects women within the political sphere. The emphasis was placed on creating robust legislation to safeguard women and advocate for their secure participation in political realms.

Delegates from Qatar were involved in various committee discussions, covering areas like democracy, human rights, United Nations matters, and sustainable development, further solidifying the role of parliaments in tackling worldwide challenges.

The concluding “Istanbul Declaration” highlighted the need for youth engagement in decision-making processes, empowering women, and the prudent use of advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. It also called for enhanced global cooperation and the transition from commitments to actionable legislative initiatives.

In sum, the Assembly reiterated the necessity of unity, communication, and parliamentary collaboration in accomplishing enduring peace globally.
