Scheduled for June 18, the Rajya Sabha elections are shaping up to be a crucial political showdown, with parties carefully monitoring the evolving political landscape following recent state elections. These polls will redefine the composition of the Upper House and may fortify the ruling National Democratic Alliance's standing in Parliament.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is ramping up its election preparations, with high-ranking leaders engaged in discussions about candidate selection and strategy. Sources within the party reveal that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently convened a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee to strategize for the pivotal contest.
The NDA is optimistic about bolstering its strength in the Rajya Sabha, aiming to surpass the 150-member threshold. Currently holding 148 seats, the alliance anticipates winning around 17 to 18 of the 25 available seats up for grabs. Achieving this would inch the coalition closer to a two-thirds majority in the Upper House.
One of the significant elements in play ahead of the elections is the risk of cross-voting in states where margins are precariously narrow. Observers are particularly keen on Madhya Pradesh, which has three Rajya Sabha seats at stake. The Congress is positioned to secure one seat but is at risk due to a slim margin of supporting votes.
Several prominent political figures are nearing the end of their tenures in the Rajya Sabha, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, and Union Ministers George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu. Their future roles are expected to significantly influence party strategies going forward.
In Karnataka, the Congress appears poised to claim three seats based on its legislative strengths, suggesting Kharge’s likely return to the Rajya Sabha. Rajasthan is anticipated to see a competitive battle, where the BJP is projected to secure two seats, while the Congress is likely to manage one.
The Congress finds itself in a particularly tough position in Gujarat, risking the loss of its sole Rajya Sabha seat with Shaktisinh Gohil’s term concluding this month. Lacking sufficient legislative backing, the party could potentially enter a period without representation in the Upper House from Gujarat for the first time in years.
The official election process will commence with the issuance of notifications, and June 8 has been designated as the final date for submitting nominations. In addition to regular vacancies, by-elections will also take place for three additional seats, making this contest a crucial indicator of political strength ahead of future elections.
