The elusive Arabian lynx, one of the UAE’s rarest wild cats, has been spotted again in Wadi Wurayah National Park, Fujairah. The sighting brings excitement to nature lovers and conservationists across the country, showing the species still thrives in protected areas.
Motion-Sensor Cameras Capture Wildlife
The lynx was recorded on motion-sensor cameras installed under the “Notice Nature” initiative. Supported by Mashreq Bank, Fujairah Environment Authority, and Emirates Nature–WWF, these cameras operate day and night using infrared light to capture wildlife activity silently within the reserve.
Conservation Efforts Show Success
This sighting confirms that the Arabian lynx continues to roam the UAE’s mountains. Previously recorded in Jebel Hafeet in 2019 and near Wadi Shees in 2023, its reappearance in Fujairah in 2025 highlights the success of ongoing habitat protection and endangered species programs.
Importance of the Arabian Lynx
Known for its strong body and distinctive black ear tufts, the lynx plays a vital role in the ecosystem. By hunting small animals, it helps maintain the natural food chain in desert and mountainous areas, contributing to ecological balance.
Expert Opinions on the Sighting
Dr. Ali Hassan Al Hammoudi, Director of Biodiversity at the Fujairah Environment Authority, said the lynx’s return is a symbol of hope, coinciding with World Habitat Day. He noted that Wadi Wurayah has become a sanctuary for rare wildlife, including Blanford’s fox.
Dr. Andrew Gardner from Emirates Nature–WWF described the sighting as both rare and important, reminding everyone of the ongoing need to protect nature and endangered species for future generations.
The reappearance of the Arabian lynx highlights how care, patience, and collaboration can help restore nature. Conservation initiatives in the UAE continue to ensure that wildlife populations recover and thrive in their natural habitats.
This discovery encourages continued efforts in environmental protection, habitat preservation, and species monitoring. The Arabian lynx serves as a reminder that dedicated conservation work can yield tangible results, benefiting both wildlife and human communities who cherish natural heritage.
