Journalists in Bangladesh Rescued Amid Violent Protests

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On December 19, 2025, a protest in Bangladesh escalated dramatically when enraged demonstrators attacked and set fire to newspaper offices in the capital.

The unrest erupted following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a 32-year-old youth leader. His supporters congregated in significant numbers, initially protesting peacefully, but tensions quickly flared into violence.

Destruction of Offices

The protestors first targeted a well-known Bengali newspaper late at night, causing extensive damage before igniting a fire just past midnight.

Subsequently, this same group advanced towards another significant newspaper office in Karwan Bazar, where a warning was relayed to journalists, alerting them that a large mob was approaching.

Before the journalists could flee, the protestors invaded the building, wreaking havoc on the lower floors before setting it ablaze.

Inside the Flames

Night-shift journalists became ensnared within the engulfing flames. Thick smoke permeated the areas, rendering it difficult to breathe.

One of the journalists shared online their desperate plea for assistance, indicating they were suffocating from the smoke.

To evade the flames, the trapped journalists retreated to the building's roof, awaiting rescue while the fire raged below.

Hours of Rescue Efforts

Firefighters managed to control the blaze around 2 a.m., but the situation remained perilous. Ongoing violence from the crowd hindered rescue efforts.

After several tense hours, security personnel successfully evacuated approximately 25 to 30 journalists to safety.

A staff member later confirmed all journalists were accounted for and thanked the first responders for their heroic actions.

This crucial rescue operation averted a potential tragedy, underscoring the risks faced by journalists.

Military Assistance Deployed

In the aftermath, military forces were stationed outside the damaged facilities to manage the unrest and curb further violence.

During the turmoil, a senior editor was physically assaulted by demonstrators, with footage capturing the alarming incident.

Motive Behind the Assault Remains Unclear

The reasons for targeting specific newspaper offices remain ambiguous. Both publications have maintained a reputation for fair reporting, prompting an expected investigation by authorities.

This occurrence has intensified concerns over the safety of journalists in Bangladesh, highlighting the increasing perils they face in their pursuit of truth.

The chaotic events of the night have deeply unsettled the media community, raising alarms about the ongoing risks faced by those dedicated to journalism.
