Luthra Brothers Deported to India Following Goa Nightclub Fire

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, who owned the nightclub “Birch by Romeo Lane” in Goa, were returned to India on Tuesday after being deported from Thailand. They fled shortly after a devastating fire broke out at their establishment, which resulted in the tragic loss of 25 lives, including 20 employees and five tourists.

The incident occurred on December 6, mere hours after the brothers flew to Phuket. Witnesses report a crowded scene at the club during the fire, with over 100 patrons present on the dance floor. Investigators have concluded that the fire was ignited by electronic fireworks used in a performance, causing a rapid spread of flames that engulfed the venue.

Officials indicated that the nightclub’s construction materials, particularly flammable items like bamboo, exacerbated the fire's ferocity. Panic ensued among guests attempting to flee the chaos, with some unfortunate individuals getting trapped within the kitchen area.

Access to the nightclub was hindered due to its narrow entryways, leading to significant delays for emergency services as they worked to reach the site, which further contributed to the tragedy’s high casualty rate.

After their escape to Thailand, the Luthras were detained on December 11, discovered by authorities upon leaving their hotel in Phuket. Following their arrest, they were moved to Bangkok for deportation back to India. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice had been issued, resulting in international efforts to locate them.

Upon their return to Delhi, they were promptly taken into police custody and are set to be presented before a local court, where officials will request their transit remand for a return to Goa. The police have launched criminal proceedings, alleging culpable homicide and negligence against the brothers for operating the nightclub without adhering to basic safety regulations.

So far, five individuals related to the management of the nightclub have been arrested by Goa Police as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are meticulously reviewing safety permits, building licenses, and compliance documents to hold accountable those responsible for this tragic event.

This incident has reignited discussions about safety protocols within nightlife establishments nationwide, particularly during bustling weekends, as bereaved families continue their quest for justice over the catastrophic fire.
