Cultural Journalism Workshop Held at Riyadh Book Fair 2025

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

At the Riyadh International Book Fair 2025, supervised by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission, a workshop titled "Cultural Journalism and Critical Reporting" was organized. The session was presented by Mirza Al-Khuwaildi and attended by a group of visitors and cultural enthusiasts. The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of cultural writing and journalism, helping them understand how to produce high-quality content for different media platforms.

Understanding Cultural Media

Al-Khuwaildi explained that cultural media combines two main elements: media and culture. Its significance lies in connecting people, providing context, and promoting cultural communication. Participants learned that content creation tools vary widely, including articles, videos, podcasts, publications, images, and infographics. The workshop emphasized that cultural media can educate, entertain, or provide information to a targeted audience, depending on the purpose and platform used.

Three Pillars of Successful Media

The workshop highlighted that successful cultural media rests on three fundamental pillars: the idea, the platform, and the audience. Al-Khuwaildi explained that a strong idea is the foundation of any content, the platform determines how content reaches people, and understanding the audience ensures the message is relevant and effective. He also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different content types, helping attendees understand how to balance creativity with informative value.

Exploring Content Types

Various types of content were covered during the workshop, including educational, cultural, artistic, analytical, tourism-related, and entertainment media. Al-Khuwaildi emphasized that each type serves a different purpose but shares the goal of engaging audiences meaningfully. He guided participants on how to adapt their content style to suit their goals, whether it is to inform, entertain, or promote cultural awareness.

The Riyadh International Book Fair 2025 concluded on Saturday after ten days of vibrant events, seminars, workshops, and artistic performances. The fair reaffirmed its position as the Kingdom’s largest annual cultural event, celebrating books, literature, and cultural life. Through workshops like this, attendees gained valuable skills in cultural journalism and content creation, contributing to the growth of cultural media in Saudi Arabia.
