At 51, Robbie has been utilizing Mounjaro, an injectable drug commonly administered for Type 2 diabetes and obesity. A 2024 study exhaustively monitored around 17,000 individuals over six years, suggesting a possible correlation between semaglutide and rare eye conditions that could heighten vision loss risk, though a direct cause-and-effect link was not conclusively established.
Experts indicate that pre-existing conditions like poorly managed diabetes, prevalent among users of these drugs, may also play a role in eye complications. Another 2024 report documented nine cases of vision problems arising from weight loss injectables meant for Type 2 diabetes, including optic nerve strokes and inflammation, with some instances leading to partial and possibly irreversible vision impairment.
Ophthalmologists emphasize the need for regular monitoring and preventive care for individuals using weight loss injectables. They advise evaluating the risks and benefits in consultation with healthcare providers, staying vigilant about vision changes, and attending routine eye exams, paying special attention to those with cardiovascular concerns or a history of smoking.
