Allegations of Sexual Abuse by Israeli Hostage Rom Braslavski in Gaza

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Rom Braslavski, a 21-year-old Israeli hostage taken from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, has come forward with alarming claims of sexual abuse during his two-year ordeal in Gaza. This marks a significant instance as he is the first male hostage to disclose such allegations, providing a crucial perspective on the treatment of captives by Palestinian militant factions.

In an affecting interview with Channel 13’s Hazinor programme, Braslavski detailed how he was stripped and bound, enduring repeated humiliation at the hands of his captors, stating, “It was sexual violence aimed solely at degrading me, crushing my sense of self-worth.” He vividly recounted the regular beatings he suffered, expressing, “You find yourself praying for it to end. Every day brings new pain, but surviving another day in hell feels like a victory.”

Braslavski was primarily held by Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian group linked with Hamas, which participated in cross-border attacks in October 2023. During his captivity, a released video depicted him visibly emaciated and in considerable distress. He was finally liberated on October 13, 2025, as part of a cessation of hostilities that also facilitated the release of 20 other hostages alongside around 2,000 Palestinian detainees.

An Islamic Jihad official dismissed Braslavski’s allegations as “incorrect,” without elaborating further. Conversely, an Israeli government representative labeled his testimony as “a stark reminder” of the harsh realities hostages endure under Gaza’s militant groups.

Earlier accounts have highlighted sexual abuse of female hostages, with UN experts validating in March 2024 that numerous captives in Gaza were victims of sexual violence. Hamas, responsible for a majority of hostages, has consistently refuted these claims.

Braslavski’s revelations illuminate the extensive humanitarian consequences of the enduring conflict, which has led to over 68,000 fatalities during Israel’s military actions and involved the abduction of 251 hostages in 2023. Human rights organizations have reported abuses from both sides, including allegations of sexual violence within Israeli detention facilities.

His bravery in sharing this harrowing experience is vital for understanding the profound human toll of conflict and emphasizes the ongoing inquiries into wartime abuses.
