RCU Highlights AlUla’s Global Conservation Role at IUCN Congress

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) is taking part in the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress, which is being held in Abu Dhabi from October 9 to 15. The congress is the largest and most influential global event focused on nature conservation and sustainable development. It gathers leaders from governments, international organizations, Indigenous communities, and private companies to discuss environmental challenges and agree on future strategies for protecting nature.

The RCU’s participation at this event reflects its growing role in promoting conservation and sustainability not only in Saudi Arabia but also at the global level. Through its work, RCU is helping to turn AlUla into a model of harmony between natural preservation and human development.

AlUla as a Global Conservation Model

RCU’s participation in the IUCN Congress demonstrates its strong commitment to positioning AlUla as a global model for conservation. The organization has launched several major programs that focus on restoring ecosystems, reintroducing endangered species, and encouraging sustainable living practices.

These projects are an important part of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, which aim to increase green areas, reduce carbon emissions, and support biodiversity. RCU’s work proves that economic progress and environmental protection can go hand in hand.

Wildlife Protection and Ecosystem Restoration

A key topic at the RCU’s presentation in the congress is its successful wildlife preservation and ecosystem restoration programs. Over the past few years, RCU has reintroduced several endangered species such as the Arabian leopard, sand gazelle, and red-necked ostrich into AlUla’s natural reserves. These programs help to restore the balance of the region’s ecosystems and protect rare species that are vital to the environment.

In addition, RCU has invested in restoring native plant species and developing water-saving systems to maintain healthy habitats. These projects not only support biodiversity but also provide valuable learning and research opportunities for scientists and conservation students.

Recognition for Sharaan Nature Reserve

RCU is also celebrating a major achievement at the congress — the inclusion of Sharaan Nature Reserve on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas. This recognition confirms that Sharaan is managed with strong environmental standards and community involvement.

The Sharaan Nature Reserve combines scientific conservation methods with local community participation. Residents are involved in protecting the area and are encouraged to share traditional knowledge about sustainable living. This helps build a deeper connection between people and nature.

Strengthening Global Conservation Partnerships

RCU’s close partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has been a major factor in its success. Established in 2021, and strengthened by official membership in 2022, this collaboration has resulted in important projects such as the AlUla Protected Areas Network (APAN) and the Sports for Nature program.

These initiatives have helped RCU develop conservation frameworks, restore ecosystems, and engage local communities in protecting nature. The Sports for Nature initiative, for example, promotes sustainable sports and outdoor activities that raise awareness about the environment.

Balancing Agriculture and Biodiversity

Another focus of RCU’s work is balancing agriculture and biodiversity. Through its contribution to the IUCN Flagship Report on Agriculture and Conservation, RCU has shared how AlUla farmers are adopting eco-friendly agricultural methods. These practices protect soil, save water, and help maintain native plant and animal species.

This combination of traditional farming and modern sustainability demonstrates how human activities can support rather than harm the environment.

Through its participation in the IUCN World Conservation Congress, RCU is reaffirming its position as a trusted partner in global conservation efforts. Its ongoing projects are not only restoring the natural balance of AlUla but also providing a model for sustainable development around the world.

As Saudi Arabia continues to promote environmental protection through Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, RCU’s work stands as a shining example of how conservation, innovation, and community involvement can come together to build a greener future.
