RTA Improves nol Card Top-Up with Better Digital Services

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has taken big steps to improve the way people add money to their nol cards. These cards are used to pay for public transport in the city. RTA wants to make public transport better, keep customers happy, and make the travel experience easier for everyone. To do this, RTA introduced several digital services and upgrades.

New Smart Machines and Awareness Campaigns

To help people top up their nol cards more easily, RTA launched new digital ticket vending and top-up machines. These machines are now placed in different areas, especially at metro stations. Along with this, RTA started awareness campaigns. These campaigns teach people how to use different digital methods to top up their cards. Some of these methods include the RTA website, smart ticket machines, and mobile payment apps. This makes the process faster and more convenient.

Higher Minimum Top-Up at Metro Stations

RTA also made a change to the minimum amount that people can add to their nol cards at metro stations. This change was made at both the ticket vending machines and the ticket sales offices. The higher minimum amount helps reduce the number of small transactions and makes the system more efficient. This move is part of RTA’s efforts to encourage digital payments and reduce cash handling.

Rise in Digital Top-Ups in 2025

Thanks to these improvements, more people started using digital channels to add money to their nol cards. In the first half of 2025, there was a clear increase in digital top-ups compared to the same time in 2024. This means people are becoming more comfortable using technology to manage their public transport payments. RTA sees this as a sign that their efforts are working, and more passengers are choosing easy, smart ways to top up.

Ticket Machine Use Dropped by 28%

Because more people are using digital options, the number of top-up transactions through traditional ticket vending machines dropped by 28% in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024. This shows that passengers are slowly moving away from using physical machines and prefer online or mobile methods. However, even within the machines, digital transactions increased, which shows the machines are still being used but in a more advanced way.

Digital Top-Ups Through Machines Increased by 20%

Even though the total use of ticket vending machines went down, the number of digital top-up transactions done through these machines went up by 20% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This means that when people do use the machines, they are mostly using cards or digital payment options instead of cash.

Cash Payments at Ticket Sales Offices Dropped by 37%

Ticket sales offices also saw a big drop in cash transactions for nol card top-ups. In the first half of 2025, there were 37% fewer cash transactions compared to 2024. This decline is mainly because RTA raised the minimum amount that can be added to a nol card, which discouraged small cash top-ups. People are also choosing faster and easier digital methods.

Digital Sales Office Top-Ups Fell by 6%

Interestingly, even digital transactions done at ticket sales offices dropped by 6% in the first half of 2025. This small drop happened because more people started using smart ticket vending machines and other digital payment platforms instead. These platforms include apps and online tools that don’t require any physical contact or waiting in line.

Total Transactions at Sales Offices Reduced by 26%

Altogether, the number of nol card top-up transactions at ticket sales offices dropped by 26% in the first half of 2025 when compared to the same time in 2024. This clearly shows that people now prefer using digital options instead of going to a counter. It’s a sign that RTA’s efforts to push for digital change are working.

Benefits of Going Digital

The move towards digital top-ups helped in many ways. It reduced the number of people crowding around machines and counters. This made metro stations less congested and more comfortable. It also lowered the cost of handling cash, which involves collecting, counting, and securing money. By reducing these costs, RTA can spend more on improving public services.

Fewer Breakdowns in Ticket Machines

Another big benefit of fewer transactions and more digital payments is that the machines now face fewer technical problems. In fact, the number of machine breakdowns went down by 80% in the first half of 2025. With less wear and tear from cash handling, the machines are lasting longer and working more smoothly.

Happier Customers and Better Services

All these changes are aimed at making public transport in Dubai more modern and user-friendly. When services work better and faster, customers are more satisfied. RTA hopes to continue improving digital services to make sure everyone, from daily commuters to tourists, has a good experience using public transport.

Continued Commitment to Smart Transport

RTA’s work is part of a bigger plan to make Dubai’s public transport system smart and efficient. By encouraging digital payments, RTA is not just improving customer satisfaction but also building a future-ready transport system. These efforts support Dubai’s vision of becoming a smart city that uses technology to improve everyday life.
