Russia and China Reject UN Resolution on Hormuz

Post by : Shakul

In a significant move, Russia and China have vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution proposed to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This decision marks a setback in international attempts to ensure free passage through this crucial maritime route. Throughout discussions, the resolution had been weakened to avoid opposition.

The final vote concluded at 11-2 with two members abstaining, highlighting evident divisions among the council. This proposal aimed to guarantee safe passage for vessels amid rising regional tensions, particularly following remarks from Donald Trump concerning Iran’s dominion over the strait, which sees about one-fifth of the globe's oil flow.

In defense of their veto, Russia and China expressed concerns that the resolution might be manipulated to legitimize further military interventions. They pointed out that the proposal neglected the fundamental issues underlying the conflict and could worsen the situation by granting extensive powers for intervention under the pretext of ensuring maritime safety.

Post-veto, the two nations proposed an alternative draft calling for an immediate cessation of military actions and denouncing assaults on civilians and infrastructures. Meanwhile, nations in the Gulf voiced their apprehension over this standstill, emphasizing the importance of protecting international shipping channels and upholding stability in worldwide commerce.
