In a prestigious ceremony held in Nikko, Japan, Louvre Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Richard Mille, declared Ryoichi Kurokawa the recipient of the fifth Richard Mille Art Prize. Selected from a pool of talented artists at Art Here 2025, Kurokawa was awarded a US$60,000 prize for his innovative piece skadw-.
skadw- transforms shadows into a captivating artistic experience. This installation utilizes light, sound, and enveloping fog to create a dynamic environment where shadows manifest a physical presence. A focused beam of light navigates through layers of mist, sculpting ephemeral patterns that emerge and dissolve, inviting the audience to experience absence and spatial awareness as tangible entities.
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Ma, which celebrates intervals and voids, Kurokawa explores the element of shadow not just as an outcome of light but as a medium that influences perception.
Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, commended the work, stating: “skadw- engages the theme of 'Shadows' with both emotional resonance and formal precision, exemplifying the prize’s dedication to artistic excellence and innovation.”
Tilly Harrison, Managing Director of Richard Mille Middle East, remarked, “Kurokawa’s technique connects Japanese heritage with global viewpoints, fostering intercultural dialogues in contemporary art.”
The jury, comprised of renowned figures including His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Dr. Guilhem André, Maya Allison, Sophie Mayuko Arni, and Yuko Hasegawa, ensured a thorough evaluation process.
Dr. André emphasized the artists’ innovative approaches to this year's theme, underlining how Art Here artfully integrates contemporary works within the stunning architecture of Louvre Abu Dhabi. Sophie Mayuko Arni noted that skadw- was among the most visited and appreciated exhibits, highlighting the transformative impact of technology and new media in modern art.
Ryoichi Kurokawa conveyed his appreciation, stating: “skadw- allows shadows to shape perception, lending absence a tangible reality. I feel privileged to share my work with a diverse audience.”
This year's Art Here 2025 received over 400 entries from artists throughout the GCC, Japan, and MENA regions, featuring shortlisted works by Ahmed Alaqra, Jumairy, Rintaro Fuse, Hamra Abbas, and the duo YOKOMAE et BOUAYAD on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi until 28 December.
Art Here continues to be a vital platform promoting contemporary artists, providing fresh perspectives and fostering artistic intercultural exchange.
