Malaysia has officially ended the haze emergency in Sarawak on Borneo island, yet officials caution that air pollution levels are still alarmingly unhealthy in numerous regions. This state of emergency was initiated when pollution escalated alarmingly in Serian, a town approximately 65 kilometers south of the state capital, Kuching. The crisis was largely attributed to thick smoke from forest fires in adjacent Indonesia that severely impacted air quality in surrounding areas.

Critical Pollution Levels Reached

The emergency was prompted when Serian's Air Pollution Index (API) surpassed a critical threshold of 500, peaking at 519 and enveloping the town in dense smoke. Malaysian health guidelines classify API readings above 300 as hazardous, while those over 500 can trigger emergency declarations, underscoring the severity of the situation in Serian.

Emergency Declaration Lifted

On Monday, Malaysia's Prime Minister's Office confirmed that King Sultan Ibrahim has consented to lift the emergency declaration. However, officials emphasized that the situation remains serious. Unhealthy API readings persist in many areas of Sarawak even after the emergency was revoked.

Recent Rain Offers Relief

Some respite was provided to Serian as rain fell on Friday night and Saturday morning, which is believed to follow cloud-seeding efforts aimed at alleviating the situation. According to the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board, API levels had dropped to the low 200s by Monday. While this marks a notable improvement from the peak of 519, it still signifies unhealthy air quality.

Regional Haze Linked to Indonesian Forest Fires

The haze, affecting regions in both Indonesia and Malaysia, has persisted for several weeks. Extensive forest fires in Indonesia have devastated large swathes of Borneo and Sumatra, with smoke traversing borders to impact neighboring nations, including Singapore and Brunei. This highlights the annual transboundary haze crisis in Southeast Asia.
