Saskatchewan's Deficit May Exceed $1.4B as SaskPower Seeks Additional Funding

Post by : Meena Hassan

The Saskatchewan government is gearing up for a significant budget shortfall, poised to spend over $1 billion more than initially planned, which could lead to a substantial deficit increase.

During a recent committee session, officials disclosed that SaskPower is seeking an extra $813 million to manage rising expenses, alongside $194 million intended for carbon fuel charge payments that have not been collected.

Opposition figures have sharply criticized Premier Scott Moe’s administration for its lack of transparency, emphasizing the absence of Crown Investments Minister Jeremy Harrison from the meeting.

NDP spokesperson Aleana Young pointed out the historic financial losses that SaskPower is currently facing, cautioning that families might see increased electricity costs. Finance critic Trent Wotherspoon labeled the situation as “reckless,” asserting that the government is shirking its responsibility.

Earlier this year, a $12-million surplus was anticipated, but the mid-year update is now indicating a $427-million deficit. Should these additional expenses be approved, Young predicts the deficit could potentially escalate to beyond $1.4 billion.

Government representatives argue that ministerial attendance at committee meetings is not mandatory, although the Opposition highlighted that no such major financial request was presented during the equivalent meeting in 2022.

SaskPower has yet to make any public statements regarding the implications, including possible rate hikes.
