Saudi Arabia Sets Its Sights on AI Leadership

Saudi Arabia is stepping up its ambition to become a major global force in artificial intelligence, with Communications and Information Technology Minister Abdullah Alswaha highlighting the Kingdom’s rapid progress in technology and the digital economy.

Alswaha said strong support from King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has played an important role in building Saudi Arabia’s technology sector and strengthening its position in the global AI race.

Digital Economy Drives Saudi AI Ambitions

The minister said Saudi Arabia is moving forward with a clear goal of playing a leading role in the AI era. The Kingdom is relying on a growing digital economy, advanced infrastructure, skilled national talent and an investment environment designed to turn technological ideas into Saudi products and companies.

According to Alswaha, these efforts are intended to help Saudi businesses compete in international markets while strengthening the country’s wider technology ecosystem.

People Remain at the Centre of Technology

Alswaha stressed that Saudi Arabia’s technological progress should not be measured only through investment figures and economic indicators. He said the real impact should be seen in the services and experiences available to citizens and residents across the Kingdom.

The minister highlighted efforts to improve telecommunications coverage and service quality, saying Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman closely follows service-level reports, customer complaints and corrective measures.

Telecom Access Gap Falls Sharply

According to figures presented by Alswaha, the gap in access to telecommunications services has fallen from a baseline of 50 per cent to 1 per cent.

He also said the service-quality gap has declined from 15 per cent to 5 per cent. The improvements were attributed to coordinated work involving the Communications, Space and Technology Commission and telecommunications companies.

AI Could Transform Government Services

The minister said improvements in digital connectivity are helping create faster and more accessible government services for people across Saudi Arabia.

Artificial intelligence is also being used to support digital experiences aimed at improving customer satisfaction and quality of life. The government sees stronger connectivity and AI-powered services as important parts of its wider digital transformation.

LEAP 2026 Highlights Technology Ambitions

Alswaha made the remarks during a government press conference organized by the Ministry of Media at the Riyadh Exhibition and Convention Center in Malham.

The press conference was held in connection with the launch of LEAP 2026 and was attended by Media Minister Salman Al-Dossary and other officials.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Role in Global Technology

Saudi Arabia’s latest technology push reflects its broader ambition to develop a competitive digital economy and establish the Kingdom as an important centre for innovation.
