Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Türkiye’s Victory Day, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
In separate cables, King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wished President Erdogan continued health and happiness. They also extended their wishes for continued progress and prosperity to the government and people of Türkiye.
Türkiye celebrates Victory Day, known as Zafer Bayramı, every year on August 30. The national occasion commemorates the decisive Turkish victory over occupying Greek forces at the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922.
The battle became a major turning point in the Turkish War of Independence and played an important role in the establishment of modern Türkiye.
The Battle of Dumlupınar was the culmination of the Great Offensive, known in Turkish as Büyük Taarruz. The campaign was led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who later became known as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
The victory allowed Turkish forces to advance rapidly through western Anatolia. The campaign eventually led to the liberation of Izmir and effectively brought the Greco-Turkish War to an end.

The Turkish military success strengthened Ankara’s position in negotiations with the Allied powers. It contributed to the Armistice of Mudanya in 1922 and later to the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
The Treaty of Lausanne established the internationally recognized borders of modern Türkiye and helped clear the way for the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye on October 29, 1923.
Victory Day was first observed locally in 1923 and was officially designated a national holiday in 1926. It also became an important official celebration for the Turkish Armed Forces.
The occasion is marked throughout Türkiye and at Turkish diplomatic missions around the world, making August 30 an important date in the country’s national history.
Victory Day celebrations include military academy graduations, promotions within the armed forces and official wreath-laying ceremonies.
One of the major commemorative locations is Anıtkabir in Ankara, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Turkish military and government officials traditionally participate in ceremonies honouring the country’s founding leader.
The greetings from King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman underline the diplomatic relationship between Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
As Türkiye marks one of its most important national occasions, the message from Saudi Arabia reflects the continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries. The anniversary also provides an opportunity to highlight Türkiye’s historical journey from the War of Independence to the establishment of its modern republic.
