A Turkish C-130 military cargo plane with 20 people on board crashed near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border on Tuesday during its return from Azerbaijan, as confirmed by the Turkish Defence Ministry.
The ministry's statement detailed, “Our C-130 military cargo plane, which was returning home from Azerbaijan, has gone down at the Georgia-Azerbaijan border. Efforts to locate survivors are underway.”
As per Georgia’s Sakaeronavigatsia air traffic control, the aircraft vanished from radar soon after entering Georgian airspace and failed to send out a distress signal prior to the crash. The incident took place near the Sighnaghi area, roughly five kilometers from the border.
Emergency services in Georgia swiftly initiated search and rescue operations alongside Turkish officials. The Georgian Interior Ministry confirmed the crash site and mentioned that teams are cooperating with Turkish and Azerbaijani authorities to access the wreckage.
Videos emerging on social media from Azerbaijan allegedly show the plane spinning out of control before crashing and bursting into flames, with black smoke billowing into the air. Other clips from the scene depicted burnt wreckage in a field, with onlookers in the vicinity.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed profound sorrow, referring to those onboard as “our martyrs.” He confirmed Turkey's collaboration with Georgian authorities in the search for any survivors.
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer condolences to Erdogan and the victims' families, showing support for Turkey during this challenging time.
Moreover, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan communicated with Georgia’s Minister Maka Bochorishvili to coordinate rescue efforts and ensure seamless communication between the nations.
No definitive cause for the accident has been established yet. The Lockheed Martin-manufactured C-130 Hercules is recognized for its robust military transport capabilities and reliability. Investigations into flight data will commence after the ongoing recovery operations conclude.
The Turkish Defence Ministry has urged the public and media to refrain from sharing unverified images or videos regarding the incident, stressing the importance of protecting the victims’ families from misinformation.
As the search persists, rescue teams are facing tough conditions in the rugged terrain along the border. Updates on the status of those onboard will follow once officials arrive at the site.
