Vice Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Mansour Al-Mushaiti, announced that Saudi Arabia’s Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) index has improved from 57% to 83%. This rapid progress is among the fastest worldwide and earned recognition from the United Nations as a model for advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) six.
Importance of Water for Development
Speaking at the 8th Cairo Water Week, Al-Mushaiti emphasized that water is a global priority essential for sustainable development. He stressed that efficient water management is vital to meet growing needs and overcome environmental challenges.
Saudi Vision 2030 and Water Strategy
Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, the Kingdom is enhancing sustainable water management by restructuring the sector, fostering competitive legislation, promoting transparency, and encouraging private sector participation. These reforms aim to ensure the sustainable and efficient use of water resources for current and future generations.
Modern Technologies and Efficiency Gains
The Saudi Water Partnership Company manages projects valued at over SAR 47 billion, producing nearly 10 million cubic meters of desalinated water and 600,000 cubic meters of treated wastewater daily. Adoption of modern technologies has improved efficiency by 70% and reduced operational costs by 50%, demonstrating the Kingdom’s commitment to innovation in water management.
Challenges Facing the Water Sector
Al-Mushaiti highlighted challenges such as climate change, population growth, and declining groundwater reserves. He emphasized the importance of integrated water management, modern technologies, and transparent governance across the water service chain to ensure long-term sustainability.
Green and Renewable Solutions
The Kingdom is investing in environmentally friendly water production projects powered by renewable energy. These initiatives aim to reduce environmental impact while increasing water security and sustainability across the country.
Platforms and Initiatives for Water Advancement
Saudi Arabia has launched platforms such as Saudi Water Week and the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water. These initiatives aim to transform water challenges into opportunities for economic growth and sustainable development. The Kingdom’s efforts also reflect its leadership during the G20 Summit in 2020, which highlighted global water discussions.
Invitation to Global Water Forum
Al-Mushaiti extended an invitation to the 11th World Water Forum in Riyadh in 2027. The event will serve as a key platform for addressing global water challenges, fostering international collaboration, and promoting sustainable solutions for future generations.
Saudi Arabia as a Global Model
The Kingdom’s achievements in water management and sustainable practices serve as an example for other nations. By combining technological innovation, legislative reforms, and environmental responsibility, Saudi Arabia is contributing significantly to global SDG six targets.
