Catastrophic Flooding Hits Northern China Following Typhoon Bavi

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Catastrophic flooding has impacted numerous regions in northern China after the impactful Typhoon Bavi unleashed heavy rains and fierce winds, leading to widespread disruption.

Areas such as Hebei and Liaoning provinces have felt the brunt of the storm, with floodwaters severely affecting daily activities and damaging essential infrastructure, prompting urgent rescue and evacuation efforts.

Officials attribute this flooding to the landfall of Typhoon Bavi, the most powerful cyclone to affect mainland China this year, which resulted in significant rainfall across the eastern and northeastern territories.

Flooded Roads and Submerged Vehicles

In Kuancheng County, Hebei Province, floodwaters have surged to over two meters, engulfing roads and immobilizing residents. Online videos depicted vehicles adrift in rushing currents, colliding, and being swept away.

Authorities reported that approximately 1,800 residents have been isolated due to rising water levels, with rescue teams engaged in relocating individuals to vantage points of safety.

Several neighborhoods across different cities are entirely submerged, rendering many streets unpassable for vehicles.

Suspension of Train Services and School Closures

The heavy rainfall also significantly disrupted transport across northeastern China. Railway operators halted various train operations in Shenyang, affecting over 30 rail sections due to flooding and weather complications.

Various districts, including segments of Jilin Province, closed schools as local authorities prioritized the safety and well-being of residents amid the ongoing severe conditions.

Officials have advised residents against unnecessary travel until weather conditions stabilize.

Authorities Issue Red Alerts for Flooding

In Liaoning Province, officials have issued a red alert for flash floods, highlighting an extremely elevated risk of inundation in susceptible areas.

Local governments are guiding businesses to halt operations as needed and advise residents to stay indoors during the intense precipitation.

Meteorologists also predict the potential for severe thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds in northeastern and eastern China, with gusts reaching up to 117 kilometers per hour in some locations.

Rivers Exceed Warning Thresholds

As per China's Ministry of Water Resources, 46 rivers nationwide are currently flowing above cautionary levels due to the persistent rainfall.

Emergency response teams remain on high alert as predictions for further rainfall in affected areas increase the likelihood of additional floods and landslides.

Authorities are actively engaged in rescue missions while closely monitoring river conditions and enhancing flood control operations in areas identified as high-risk.
