Bhutan Experiences 3.1 Magnitude Shallow Earthquake

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Bhutan experienced a shallow earthquake of magnitude 3.1 early Thursday, raising concern among residents. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the quake occurred at a depth of just 5 kilometers, intensifying the shaking despite its moderate size. The tremor caused widespread alert but no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.

Recent Seismic Activity in the Kingdom

This earthquake follows a series of recent tremors on September 8, when two quakes of 2.8 and 4.2 magnitude struck within hours at shallow depths of approximately 10 kilometers. The NCS indicated that seismic activity was concentrated in Bhutan’s eastern and central regions, pointing to ongoing tectonic movements in the Himalayan area.

Risks of Shallow Earthquakes

Shallow earthquakes, like the recent events, are particularly dangerous because seismic waves have less distance to travel, often intensifying surface shaking. This can increase risks to buildings, infrastructure, and human safety, even if the magnitude is moderate. Experts stress that the shallow depth of Bhutan’s quakes makes preparedness essential.

Bhutan’s Geographical Vulnerability

Bhutan is situated in the young Himalayan mountains, a globally recognized high-risk seismic zone. According to the Indian Seismic Code, Bhutan lies within zones IV and V, areas prone to high-intensity earthquakes. The kingdom’s steep terrain and fragile geology increase vulnerability, making earthquakes a significant natural hazard for its communities.

Other Natural Hazards in Bhutan

In addition to earthquakes, Bhutan faces climate-related and geological hazards. Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, landslides, and strong seasonal winds have historically caused widespread damage. Past events, such as the 2011 and 2013 windstorms, severely impacted rural homes and infrastructure, highlighting the need for improved disaster management strategies.

Although no major casualties were reported from the latest tremor, experts emphasize the importance of awareness, early warning systems, and resilient building practices. Bhutan’s recurring seismic activity demonstrates the need for robust disaster preparedness to safeguard lives and property in the Himalayan region.

Authorities and communities are encouraged to strengthen earthquake response measures, including education, evacuation plans, and structural reinforcements. Continued monitoring by the NCS and regional cooperation will be vital in reducing risks from future seismic events.
