Sharjah established its status as a center for Arabic language and culture by hosting the closing ceremony of the Third Sharjah International Conference on Arabic Language Studies in Europe (SICALE) 2025. The conference, themed “Contributions of Orientalists to the Arabic Language,” welcomed scholars from 19 European nations to delve into the historical and contemporary significance of Arabic.
His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, along with the President of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, addressed attendees and celebrated Arabic's role in connecting diverse cultures. He highlighted that the language thrives in the hearts of people across the globe, symbolizing shared values that unite different nations.
“You are gathered here under the theme: Humanity Unites Us and Arabic Unites Us,” His Highness remarked, emphasizing collaboration in Arabic teaching, research, and methodologies, especially for those learning as a second language. He reiterated Sharjah’s dedication to promoting international partnerships in Arabic studies.
Sharjah’s Cultural Prowess
The event showcased 24 research projects, addressing various aspects such as the translation of Arabic literature, classical texts, the integration of Arabic vocabulary into European languages, and advanced teaching methodologies. Dr Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, praised the scholars for their commitment to the Arabic language, accentuating its role in fostering cultural appreciation.
Dr Irina Lebedeva from Moscow State University praised Sharjah as a cultural and literary hub, noting that Arabic facilitates dialogue among cultures and that the conference further solidified its global significance.
Preserving Arabic Literary Heritage
The importance of classical Arabic literature was a significant theme of the discussions. Dr Sebastian Günther of the University of Göttingen emphasized the necessity of engaging with Arabic texts before applying theoretical frameworks. His insights illustrated how classical literature from various eras continues to shed light on human thought and culture.
The conference also spotlighted the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, a pivotal initiative by the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy aimed at documenting and safeguarding the Arabic linguistic legacy.
Connecting Europe and the Arab World
Discussions centered on the influence of Arabic on European literature and languages, focusing on translation practices and the utilization of Arabic manuscripts concealed in European libraries. Scholars exchanged teaching strategies aimed at enhancing research skills among non-native Arabic speakers, ensuring the language flourishes in educational institutions globally.
The event wrapped up with reflections on the persistent vitality of Arabic and the vital role of international collaboration. Sharjah's position as a leader in language, culture, and academic dialogue continues to rise, further solidifying its status as a world-class hub for Arabic studies.
