Shubman Gill, who captains India in ODI and Test formats, faces a rare setback by not being included in the squad for the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup. The 25-year-old batsman’s omission comes after struggling in T20 internationals, accumulating only 291 runs in 15 innings without a fifty in recent months.
Nonetheless, Gill is gearing up for a significant return in domestic cricket. He has been selected to lead Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s top List A cricket event, starting December 24. This tournament is a critical opportunity for Gill to showcase his abilities and win back the selectors’ trust ahead of India’s international matches in January.
Joining Gill are fellow Indian players Arshdeep Singh and Abhishek Sharma, although their inclusion is uncertain due to a packed cricket schedule. India is set to embark on a three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11, followed by a five-match T20I series beginning January 21.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed centrally contracted players to engage in domestic tournaments prior to their next international commitments. Hence, Gill is expected to significantly contribute to the Vijay Hazare Trophy leading up to the ODI series.
Punjab's lineup boasts strong batsmen and all-rounders, including Prabhsimran Singh, Anmolpreet Singh, and Harpreet Brar. The team will be pitted against Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa, and Mumbai. The group stage is expected to wrap up on January 8, just before India's international fixtures begin.
For Shubman Gill, the Vijay Hazare Trophy is more than merely a competition; it is a pivotal chance to reaffirm his position in India's white-ball roster and consolidate his role as a future leader across all cricket formats.
