Singapore Issues Urgent Warning on Baby Feeding Pillows

Post by : Shakul

Authorities in Singapore have issued an urgent warning to parents and caregivers to cease using self-feeding baby pillows, citing significant choking and suffocation hazards for infants. This alert by the Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) underscores alarming concerns regarding products that allow babies to feed themselves from bottles without supervision.

Experts elucidate that infants are incapable of safely managing feeding independently due to their limited physical ability and awareness. Babies lack the control to regulate milk flow, recognize when to stop feeding, or adequately respond if they experience choking or gagging, substantially raising the risk of severe incidents.

Moreover, officials have cautioned that the structure of these pillows may result in accidental suffocation, particularly if a baby shifts positions. Other health risks include lung infections and ear infections arising from improper feeding posture.

This warning mirrors similar notices from safety agencies in nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, which have voiced concerns regarding the use of bottle-propping devices. Pediatric specialists worldwide advocate for infants to be fed only under direct adult supervision.

Caregivers are emphatically advised against propping feeding bottles with pillows, blankets, or other supports—even if labeled as safe. It is recommended that infants be held or positioned semi-upright during feeding to ensure they are closely monitored.

This advisory highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding infant care products globally, affirming that convenience should never come at the expense of a child’s safety.
