Elderly Driver Penalized for Fatal Blunder in Singapore

Elderly Driver Penalized for Fatal Blunder in Singapore

Post by : Shakul

In a tragic turn of events, a Singapore court has handed an 86-year-old driver the highest possible fine after a fatal pedal error resulted in the deaths of two of his longtime friends. This incident raises significant concerns about road safety, especially regarding elderly operators.

The accident unfolded on October 11, 2023, at the entrance of a multi-storey car park in Toa Payoh. Phua Chiew Tong, the driver, was with his close friends, aged 76 and 83, with whom he shared a bond for over fifty years.

As the passengers exited the vehicle, the car unexpectedly started rolling backward. In a bid to halt the motion, the driver accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. This resulted in the car striking both friends, causing them to fall and suffer severe injuries after the vehicle rolled over them before colliding with a kerb and pillar.

Despite immediate medical attention, both victims succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter. Medical examinations indicated that they died due to multiple traumas and severe blunt force injuries.

As a result, the court levied a fine of S$10,000 and prohibited the driver from obtaining or holding a driving licence for the next eight years. Prosecutors remarked on the 'exceptional circumstances' of the case, given the life-altering impact of a single error.

The defence was quick to point out the driver’s age, health issues, and the emotional toll from the accident, noting his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder. Although the court acknowledged these factors, it emphasized the need for accountability in light of the tragic loss of life.

This case has ignited broader conversations in Singapore concerning assessments for elderly drivers, greater road safety education, and essential measures to avert similar incidents in the future.
