Ministers in Singapore Challenge Bloomberg’s GCB Report in Court

Post by : Shakul

In a significant defamation trial, Singapore has witnessed two Cabinet ministers engaging in legal action against Bloomberg, centered around a contentious article highlighting valuable property transactions.

Specifically, the case in the Singapore High Court involves K. Shanmugam, Coordinating Minister for National Security, and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng. They claim a December 2024 report by Bloomberg on “good class bungalow” (GCB) transactions misrepresented their dealings, portraying them in a detrimental light.

Key to the trial were internal communications among Bloomberg staff, scrutinized by the court to understand the article’s creation. These emails hinted at discussions linking high-value property deals to larger issues like financial accountability and the utilization of trusts during politically complex times.

During cross-examination, Shanmugam asserted that the correspondence reflected a biased narrative, labeling media inquiries he received as a “trap.” He indicated that the final article may have been altered based on his feedback.

In defense, Bloomberg emphasized the fairness of its reporting, with journalist Low De Wei affirming the article's integrity. The court also explored communications from the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), which refrained from detailed media responses, citing privacy concerns.

The ministers’ legal representatives argued that critical facts were either missing or disproportionately emphasized, raising issues about regulatory oversight and transparency within Singapore’s upscale property sector.

Additionally, the trial underscored Singapore's legal stipulations regarding the “production of documents,” mandating that all relevant evidence must be shared during the legal process.

As witness testimonies wrap up, the court is preparing to hear final oral arguments in May. This trial's outcome is poised to influence media responsibility, press liberties, and how financial stories are reported in Singapore.
