Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) and Scottish Heriot-Watt University have formalized an agreement to strengthen collaboration in academics, research, and professional training. The MoU aims to bring together the expertise of both institutions to enhance learning and innovation in maritime studies.
The MoU was signed at SMA’s Khorfakkan campus by Dr. Hashim Al Zaabi, Chancellor of SMA, and Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai. Senior officials from both institutions attended the ceremony, highlighting the importance of this collaboration for maritime education in the UAE.
The agreement sets a framework for cooperation in faculty development, joint research supervision, teaching exchange, and collaborative academic initiatives. These steps are designed to improve the quality of education, enhance innovation, and prepare students to meet the growing demands of the maritime sector.
Under the MoU, faculty from Heriot-Watt University will support SMA staff through development sessions, workshops, and training programs. This initiative aims to share best practices, introduce advanced teaching methods, and strengthen the professional skills of educators at SMA.
Both institutions will explore opportunities for co-supervised research projects, applied studies, and knowledge exchange programs. These efforts will contribute to innovation in maritime practices, support sustainable industry solutions, and prepare students for real-world challenges in the field.
Dr. Hashim Al Zaabi highlighted that the MoU reflects SMA’s commitment to building international academic partnerships that enhance learning outcomes and applied research. He emphasized that this collaboration aligns with the UAE’s vision for sustainable industry growth and knowledge-based development.
Professor Heather McGregor stated that this partnership leverages the strengths of both SMA and Heriot-Watt University. She noted that combining research, faculty collaboration, and professional development will benefit students, support the UAE’s education sector, and promote regional maritime expertise.
The collaboration is expected to prepare graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve the UAE and the wider region. By focusing on academic excellence, research innovation, and professional training, SMA and Heriot-Watt aim to produce highly skilled maritime professionals ready to meet industry challenges.
The MoU lays the foundation for long-term cooperation, promoting applied learning, research, and faculty exchange. It also strengthens partnerships between academia and industry, ensuring that students gain practical knowledge while contributing to the sustainable development of the maritime sector.
This partnership represents a significant milestone in maritime education in the UAE. By fostering collaboration, research, and professional development, SMA and Heriot-Watt University are paving the way for innovative solutions, skilled graduates, and enhanced international cooperation in maritime studies.
