Small Earthquake Hits Oman's Madha Region Near UAE Border

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Early on Thursday morning, a small earthquake struck the Madha region in Oman. The tremor occurred at 5:13 a.m. and had a magnitude of 2.2. This level is considered minor, as earthquakes are only called strong when they measure five or above on the magnitude scale. The tremor was felt lightly in surrounding areas, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Where Madha is Located

Madha is a unique land area in Oman, covering about 75 hectares. What makes it unusual is that it is completely surrounded by the United Arab Emirates. The surrounding UAE emirates include Sharjah, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah. This makes Madha a small Omani area inside the UAE, which is called an exclave.

Nahwa Village Inside Madha

Inside Madha lies another small settlement called Nahwa. The village has around 40 houses. Nahwa is fully enclosed by Omani land but belongs officially to the Emirate of Sharjah in the UAE. This creates a rare geographical situation where a village is part of the UAE but is inside Omani territory. Residents of Nahwa experienced the tremor along with the people of Madha.

Recent Tremors in UAE Towns

This earthquake is not the only small tremor in the region recently. In early August, the UAE recorded a few minor earthquakes. On August 5, a 2.0-magnitude tremor struck Khor Fakkan in Sharjah. Earlier in the month, a slightly stronger tremor of 3.5 magnitude occurred in Al Sila, a small town in Abu Dhabi near the Saudi border. These events show that minor earthquakes, though rare, can occur in different parts of the Emirates.

Understanding Earthquake Magnitudes

Earthquakes are measured by magnitude. A minor tremor, like the 2.2-magnitude quake in Madha, is usually too small to cause damage. Earthquakes measuring five or higher are classified as strong and may cause structural damage, injuries, or more serious consequences. Tremors below three are usually felt only slightly and do not cause any harm to buildings or people.

Why Earthquakes Happen in Oman and UAE

Major earthquakes are rare in Oman and the UAE. However, these countries are near regions with higher seismic activity, especially Iran. Tremors in the UAE or Oman are often caused by larger quakes in nearby countries. These small tremors can travel across borders and be felt lightly in distant areas. Residents may feel the ground shake, but such events are generally safe.

Safety Measures During Minor Tremors

Even minor earthquakes require caution. Residents are advised to stay away from tall buildings, glass windows, and heavy furniture during a tremor. It is important to remain calm, move to safe areas if necessary, and avoid crowded places until the shaking stops. Preparing for small earthquakes helps people act correctly if a stronger quake ever occurs.

Monitoring by Authorities

Authorities in the UAE and Oman monitor earthquakes closely. The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology keeps track of all minor tremors and informs the public quickly. By observing these small quakes, experts can study patterns and give advice to communities about safety. Monitoring also helps understand how earthquakes in nearby countries can affect the UAE and Oman.

Regional Impact of Tremors

Minor earthquakes remind people that the Middle East is seismically active. While Oman and the UAE do not experience large quakes often, neighboring countries like Iran have stronger earthquakes. The tremors from these quakes can sometimes be felt in Oman and UAE. Although they are not dangerous, they serve as a reminder that the earth’s movement can reach distant areas.

Historical Earthquake Occurrences

Historically, Oman and the UAE have experienced only small quakes. Large earthquakes are rare due to the region’s geology. However, small tremors have been recorded occasionally. Studying these events helps authorities and scientists prepare for any future stronger earthquakes and understand the local seismic activity better.

Preparing Communities for Safety

It is important for residents in the UAE and Oman to know what to do during earthquakes. Even though strong earthquakes are uncommon, awareness helps people respond quickly and safely. Schools, offices, and homes should have simple safety plans. Communities can practice emergency drills, know safe spots, and prepare basic emergency kits.

Public Awareness and Education

The public is encouraged to stay informed about earthquakes through media and official websites. Safety tips, alerts, and information about recent tremors help residents understand risks and take proper precautions. Simple steps, like securing heavy objects and knowing safe areas in homes, can reduce accidents during even minor quakes.

Madha Earthquake Event

A 2.2-magnitude earthquake struck Madha in Oman early Thursday morning. The tremor was minor, with no reported damage or injuries. Madha is an unusual Omani region inside the UAE, and the nearby village of Nahwa also felt the tremor. Recent minor earthquakes in UAE towns like Al Sila and Khor Fakkan show that tremors are possible, even if strong quakes are rare. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and educate residents about earthquake safety.

Residents in the Middle East should remain aware of minor earthquakes and know how to respond. While Oman and the UAE experience few strong quakes, nearby regions with higher seismic activity can influence local tremors. Staying informed, preparing for emergencies, and following guidance from authorities ensures safety for all communities.
