South Korea Achieves Export Milestone of $185B in Q3, Driven by Semiconductors

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In the third quarter, South Korea marked a significant achievement in its export sector, with outbound shipments soaring to $185 billion, the largest quarterly total since 2010. This remarkable growth is primarily attributed to the strong performance of semiconductors, which continue to be a cornerstone of the nation's exports.

Rising Export Figures

When compared to the same quarter last year, overall exports increased by 6.5%, indicating the second consecutive quarter of growth following a 2.1% rise in Q2. Furthermore, the number of businesses involved in exporting grew by 4.5%, totaling 69,808, reflecting a growing engagement across sectors.

Semiconductors and Capital Goods at the Forefront

Shipments of capital goods, especially semiconductors, were the key contributors, rising 11.2% to reach $111 billion. This showcases South Korea's formidable position in high-tech production and its integration within global supply networks.

Consumer Goods Show Positive Turnaround

After experiencing four quarters of decline, exports of consumer goods saw an uptick, increasing by 4.9% to $23.9 billion, driven predominantly by the automobile sector. This shift suggests a recovering domestic manufacturing industry aligning with international demand.

The third-quarter data illustrates the resilience and diversification of South Korea's export landscape, balancing its tech dependency with a resurgence of consumer goods.
