Cyclone Rains Cause Death and Damage Across Southeast Asia

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Heavy rains and cyclones have caused widespread flooding across Southeast Asia, leaving at least 161 people dead. Authorities in affected countries are working tirelessly to rescue stranded citizens, restore power and communications, and support recovery as water levels slowly begin to recede. Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka have all been hit by severe weather, with torrential rain and cyclone activity triggering floods and landslides.

On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, 72 people have died due to the floods, according to Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency. The Padang Pariaman region alone recorded 22 fatalities. Residents were forced to seek higher ground as water levels reached at least one metre, with many still awaiting rescue on Friday. Muhammad Rais, a 40-year-old resident, said, “We’re running out of supplies and food,” after moving to the second floor of his home to escape rising waters. Authorities are working to restore communications, power, and clear roads blocked by landslide debris. Aid and rescue teams continue to be airlifted into the affected areas.

Thailand reported 87 deaths across eight southern provinces. More than 3.5 million people have been affected. In the southern city of Hat Yai, rain had stopped by Friday, but many residents were still ankle-deep in floodwater and remained without electricity. Locals are beginning to assess the damage caused by the week-long floods. One resident described the situation, saying he had “lost everything.”

In Malaysia, the tropical storm Senyar made landfall around midnight but has since weakened. Two deaths have been reported in the country. Authorities warned that heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas could still pose risks for small boats. Currently, around 30,000 evacuees are in shelters, slightly down from more than 34,000 the previous day. Malaysia’s foreign ministry has evacuated 1,459 citizens stranded in flood-hit areas in Thailand and is working to rescue the remaining 300 still trapped in affected regions.

Sri Lanka reported another 46 deaths due to cyclone-related flooding. Rescue teams are actively working to reach villages cut off by floodwaters and landslides. Authorities continue to issue warnings about the cyclone, which has already caused severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and local communities.

Emergency teams across the region are coordinating search-and-rescue operations while restoring essential services. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety instructions as floodwaters recede slowly. Governments in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka continue to airlift aid, provide shelter, and deliver food and medical support to affected areas. Authorities are also warning about potential further rainfall and the risk of new floods as tropical storms remain active in the region.

Roads, bridges, and public services have been severely affected, disrupting travel and daily life. Many families remain in emergency shelters and are awaiting help from authorities. The disaster highlights the vulnerability of coastal and low-lying communities to cyclones and extreme weather events. Relief efforts continue as governments focus on protecting lives, minimizing damage, and supporting communities to recover from this large-scale natural disaster.
