Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), one of the UAE’s leading hospitals for complex and serious medical care, has been re-accredited as an Academic Medical Centre by Joint Commission International (JCI) under its newly launched 8th Edition Standards.
This achievement places SSMC among the first healthcare institutions in the UAE to receive this prestigious recognition under the latest JCI framework. SSMC is a subsidiary of PureHealth, the UAE’s largest healthcare network.
The re-accreditation highlights SSMC’s strong commitment to patient safety, quality care, medical education, and research excellence. It also reflects the world-class healthcare services available in Abu Dhabi, further strengthening the emirate’s reputation as a regional and global healthcare hub.
JCI’s 8th Edition Standards represent the most advanced global healthcare accreditation model to date. The updated standards focus on patient-centred care, health equity, leadership accountability, safety culture, digital transformation, and measurable clinical outcomes.
Commenting on the milestone, Dr Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of SSMC, said the recognition reflects the dedication and expertise of the hospital’s teams in delivering high-quality care every day.
He added that re-accreditation under the new standards confirms the strength of SSMC’s integrated approach, where advanced patient care, education, and research work together to raise healthcare standards in the UAE. The JCI accreditation, widely recognised as a global benchmark for healthcare quality and safety, also reinforces SSMC’s commitment to continuous improvement and global excellence.
