Belgium secured a convincing 4-1 victory over the United States in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Monday, ending the hosts' tournament campaign. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also found the net to send Belgium into the quarter-finals.
The match was also surrounded by controversy after FIFA suspended the one-match ban on United States forward Folarin Balogun before kick-off. However, Balogun had little influence on the game as Belgium dominated for long periods.
Belgium took the lead in the ninth minute after putting the United States under early pressure. Charles De Ketelaere finished from close range with a simple tap-in after Nicolas Raskin delivered a cross into the box and the US defence failed to clear the danger.
Before the opening goal, Timothy Castagne forced goalkeeper Matt Freese into a fingertip save. Belgium also missed another early opportunity when Dodi Lukebakio produced an excellent run before creating a chance for Youri Tielemans, who failed to connect with his shot.
The United States struggled to settle into the match but found an equaliser in the 31st minute. Folarin Balogun won a free kick in a dangerous position, and Malik Tillman's effort took a deflection off Hans Vanaken's forehead before beating goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
The celebrations were short-lived. Just over a minute later, Belgium restored their lead when Leandro Trossard sent a cross into the penalty area. De Ketelaere outjumped Tim Ream and headed the ball into the net at the back post for his second goal of the match.
The United States showed more confidence after halftime and attempted to put Belgium under pressure. However, their hopes of a comeback disappeared in the 57th minute after a costly mistake by goalkeeper Matt Freese.
Freese took too much time on the ball outside his goal, allowing substitute Hans Vanaken to take advantage and score into an open net. The error shifted the momentum completely in Belgium's favour inside Seattle Stadium.
Belgium completed the scoring during stoppage time when Romelu Lukaku calmly finished to make it 4-1. The goal was Lukaku's seventh in FIFA World Cup history and his 93rd for Belgium.
The result sent many US supporters towards the exits before the final whistle as Belgium comfortably secured their place in the quarter-finals.
Much of the pre-match discussion focused on FIFA's decision to suspend Folarin Balogun's one-match ban following a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision came after an unprecedented intervention by US President Donald Trump.
Despite returning to the starting lineup, Balogun struggled to influence the match apart from winning the free kick that led to the United States' only goal.
With the victory, Belgium reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the third time in the last four editions of the tournament.
Belgium will now face European champions Spain in Los Angeles on Friday, while the United States exit the competition after their Round of 16 defeat.
